Driving a course - Turn by Turn directions
Quote | Reply
Hi everyone,

I'll be running the Poconos Marathon in a few weeks and I would like to pre-drive the course. Does anyone know how to import this route into Google maps or Waze?

Thanks,

App for phone: ViewRanger

Haven't tried it, but description seems to be what you are looking for. Found a short discussion on it: http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12857091

Does require purchase of maps.

There does seem to be a shortage of applications that will accept a predetermined route in some format and give turn by turn directions for that route, but there are cycling computers that do that. I personally use a Magellan Cyclo505 and navigation of routes works well.

That would be a useful feature for Waze and/or Google maps. Seems like they have all the pieces to make it work without any major coding.

Also, maybe look at GPX Viewer for Android, if you have an Android, obviously.

Also, consider that GPS signal might be non-existent or weak in some areas.

This is what I typically do - might work for you?

Look at the Google maps / race map close enough to map out a turn-by-turn version of it on paper as bullet points. I normally use an index card as I'll tape it to my bike during a later training ride. Then I'll Waze to a good starting point and go by my index card for the rest. I jot down rough mile markers on the index card to have an idea of how far things are (building a Strava route from this helps in both getting that and the turn-by-turn). It's a bit tedious but the few times I've done this the race was way easier!

You can download the KML file from your weblink and then import it into Google Maps on your computer. It appears KML is actally a google maps file type).

Here are the directions - https://support.google.com/...%3DDesktop&hl=en

Assuming you logged into the same Google Maps account on your phone, the map with routing will automatically show up on your phone under "Your Places" in the "Maps" tab.

And, thanks for asking - I did not know any this 5 minutes ago. Now I just have to figure out how to delete a random marathon course from my phone ;-)
