all jokes aside, how prevalent is this in triathlon? I knew it was possible but had not heard much about it actually happening in sport.

Not sure how prevalent statistically speaking but every year we hear about at least 1 or 2 athletes having this problem. I've seen articles on this ever since I started running and triathlon. Hyponatremia is at least part of the reason to drink sports drinks rather than just water when it is very hot, and/or to take salt tablets during a long hot race.
