Design to Production ---- how to?
Say I have an idea on a new bike part ----- does anyone have any advice on how to get a professionally made version of the prototype? It would involve aluminum not carbon. Any leads, links, etc would be great.

I've googled with little help.

Do you have any drawings? Paper ones? CAD files? Both? Either?

If yes, try protolabs, they have a quite an array of capabilities.

I've had a few prototypes at work made by FirstCut. They specialize in low volume CNC machining and prototyping. You can get a quote simply by uploading a STEP or SolidPart file. They're not cheap but they'll turn it around quickly and I've been happy with their quality.

It really depends on the type of part.

If form is really important (ex. complex curves, airfoils, etc.) then 3D print a proto.

If function is key than have a local machine shop make one for you. Save $$$ by eliminating functionally unnecessary work like radii and champhers. It'll look blocky, but it's a prototype to prove a concept.

Once you have suitable proof of concept, then invest in more detailed/expensive machining.
