DI2 issue... HELP please!
My friend called me the other day to tell me about a weird problem with his 9150 DI2 setup.

I went over today to check it out... and need help from the ST experts.

He was 9150, 52/36 and 11/25 cassette. Bike is in manual mode, not a Synchroshift mode.

In the little ring... he can not get in to the last two cogs (smallest) on the cassette.

In the big ring... he has full shifting all the way up and down.

How can that be?? Any ideas??

Default programming on 9150 locks out small front/smallest two rear cogs unless you have 14t or less front chainring gap.

Need to reprogram the shift logic. Last I heard, only way to defeat this lockout was to program in a different chainring combo than you're actually using, and that meets the chainring gap requirement.

Yup. Last I checked, that will unlock the gears.

Interesting, Shimano should be selling DuraAce Di2 52-36 as 10 speeds then...

Going back to 10 or less on the cassette might lessen the need for Di2. Shifting seemed so much easier when there were just two up front and five in the back.

I did get Di2 this year and LOVE it. Would not want to go back to mechanical if I could help it - zombie apocalypse scenario.

Also you'll have less of an angle on the chain if you shift to the big ring before that point. I tend to want to get in the big ring sooner rather than later given the way my cycling buddies bust my chops for not being in the big ring.

Or perhaps they are trying to avoid people like the OP's "friend" cross-chaining small/small with the pulleys so far back that the chain is rubbing on itself.

This. I have no experience with Di2, but reading this I was thinking that that restriction was actually not a bad thing.

(Having said that I'm often guilty of the opposite sin - big ring, large cog. Does it prevent you from doing that as well?)

You're right, t's not a bad thing. Once I got used to it, I kinda forgot about the limitation until this thread popped up.
Front shifting is so ridiculously good on the new DI2 that just changing the front ring to hit those gear ratios is essentially always the better option.

I had every intention of hacking the default setting when I realized it was there, but like I said - basically forgot about it.

LOL... He is my friend :). If it was me, I wouldn't have a problem saying so.

BTW... I could see locking out the last gear... small/small or big/big, but locking out the last 2 seemed excessive.

The big/big combo is not locked out.
