Crashed in my driveway tonight - ughhh Quote | Reply

Put on a new set of pedals that I bought from the classifieds and took them out for an hour ride today. For some reason, I got into the habit of unclipping the non-drive side first. On my old Speedplay pedals, I think the left side was "broken in" to make it easy to unclip.
While hitting stoplights on my ride today, I unclipped the drive side when needed becuase that pedal seemed easier to get out of.
Rolled into the driveway and tried unclipping the left pedal at a very slow rate of speed. Really close to the garage door (which meant another pedal rotation would have put me head first into the garage door). No such luck and I fell elbow/shoulder first into the concrete. Nothing hurt but my manhood.
I really should just stick to running.

At least it wasn't at a stoplight with an audience at all 4 sides.

But, who un-clips nds first? c'mon.

I'm a left and when I started riding about 5 years ago, I was having some hamstring issues. It was easier to do with my left foot. Never went back.

I too have had my manliness left to embarrassment at a stoplight. Slowed down, kindof forgot to unclip and went down. A very nice BMW right next to me which I managed to avoid somehow with my bars. Phew. And yes, I'm also a leftie and unclip on the NDS of the bike.

I am not a lefty but I unclip on the left. I used to unclip on the right, not for long though. I was out for one of my first rides and was unclipping on the right. Then I came to a stop sign, forgot to unclip and fell to the left. Hurt like hell, don't do that.

About a week later I did it again, fell to the left. I am a dummy. Then while riding my mountain bike (regular peddles) I realized that when I dismount my natural inclination is to put my left foot down first. Since then I always unclip on the left.

That happened to me after I bought my first road bike. I was just out of college and dabbling in triathlon but wasn't yet addicted. I bought this fancy new red Bianchi Giro on super-sale. I also got my first set of clipless. Practiced how to get them out in the shop with the guy.

First ride: a short 10 mile down to the beach and back. After coming up a hill I got stopped by the light and I started to slow. Couldn't unclip. It was in slomo. Down I go. Landed on my side, missed the curb with my helmet by a couple of inches. A whole string of cars drove by, some laughing, some asking for if I needed help, some refusing to make eye contact.

I finally got the left shoe out of the pedal. Right one was seized in. I rode home and, luckily, did not get stopped by anymore lights. Had to take the bike back to the shop and get them to remove the shoe. Sucked.

Thank god I am not the only one. When I got my first tri bike and keep in mind that I never been on even a road bike so had no idea how to clip and unclip but thought there was nothing hard about it. Went to the metro park in our area and clipped the right foot and had no idea how to clip the left one while moving. Fell in the parking lot with a lots of people standing and watching me with my new pro looking bike. Two ladies came over and asked me if I was ok. Will never forget that moment. Ended up falling three times until I finally clipped the left foot. When I finshed that 15 min ride and went home defeated, my son pointed out that I was bleeding and found a large cut on my left leg and ended up getting 7 stitches.

part of the club...ive stacked it 3 times thus far, latest one last weekend. Car pulled out sharply on me while i was turning at slow speed. Suprised the hell out of me, had to jam the brakes, down over the kerb i went into some grass and mud.

Like you, i have also clip stacked at my own home. This was a brick session, coming home from a quick ride in where i unclip at the front door and throw my shoes on and run and put the bike inside. On this occasion i was too slow riding up to my front door, had no pedal revolutions left (otherwise i would hit the front door) and just couldnt get my foot out. Down i went, hit the concrete at the front door. Wife opened the door thinking 'wtf was that' to me lying on the ground with a carbon fibre pretzel on top of me.

We've all been there and shared your shame.

I always unclip on the left, not sure why it just feels more comfortable. However, while learning to do so I did slowly tip over into an open top convertible mustang at a stop light once.

My first ride with new co workers: we stopped at a local bike shop where there were several dozen other riders meeting for a group ride. Just as we pull up i didn't twist hard enough and fell right on my side, HARD. Needless to say, I heard about that for a few months.

Don't worry, it happens to the best of us :)

Don't feel bad. I've been riding with clip ins since they made them (ummmm, 30+ years). Did the garage thing last year, pulled up, unclipped on the left, weight was off and fell to the left.

But the likely the funniest was a number of years ago when I came to a stop light, didnt get a foot unclipped, fell over on my right side onto the grass medium, kept rolling onto my back, deliberately (whimsically?) pushed my bike up in the air so I was upside down with tires pointed up. Then proceeded to unclip one side and laid the bike on its side, unclipped the other side and stood up.

I remember my first ever clipless pedals when they came out. A pair of Mavics. Tried to unclip at a stoplight but unclipped the wrong side and fell the other way. A kid on a BMX bike kitty corner crossed to see if I was OK. That was humbling. Glad you're OK.

I was pulling up LBS with a bunch of friends waiting for a group ride. One of the wrenches and I always joke with each other and I was calling him a loser while making the "L" hand sign on my forehead when I went over. This is after using Speedplay for about 10 years. It happens. There is usually a lot of people watching. The bright side is that you get to make a lot of people laugh!

I've still never done it on the road (knock on wood). Learned clipless on the mountain bike though, so had enough crashes there to last me a lifetime.

One of mine....I was on Rockton Ave right in front of Rockford Memorial Hospital at 7:45 AM waiting for the masses to join the "Hospital Ride" (about 35 or 40 at the time every Sat.). I pull up and for some reason cant get out of the pedal - I swerve at a bus stop roll into some grass and just BARELY get my foot out....as I am falling over - a car driven by a guy still drunk from the night before jumps the curve and runs me over (I am in the grass at a bus stop mind you). I and up busting a Softride Power V, burning my leg and foot on the underside of the car and bruising my pelvis. What made it funnier - though I was at one hospital, on their property - I made the ambulance bring to me St. Anthony's hospital some 12 miles away :-)

If it makes you feel any better, I was on a long ride about 3 weeks ago. It was hot and I was about 3 hours into the ride. I clipped out on the drive side at a stop light and set my foot down. The length of the ride and the heat made my left calf start to cramp. Because I was still clipped in on that side I couldn't straighten my leg to defeat the cramp. Because of the cramp, I couldn't clip out. Fell over standing still. A block from an outdoor festival. At peak capacity.

Before my first ride with clipless pedals my wife, a roadie, spent a bunch of time nagging me about how I had to be really careful, and everyone falls sooner or later, blah, blah, blah.

FIRST time I stopped I forgot to unclip and took a header. With a bunch of people watching. Very humbling.
