Wish I was racing! Unfortunately other "grad school" commitments are preventing me from attending. I guess it is just as well... sounds like I would have been stoned when people learned I have already competed in an NCAA sport for 5 years AND I have an elite license.

Unfortunately our team didn't do any qualifying races this year due to the loss of team members (graduation). Had no idea there is a relay now! Will have to qualify for next year for sure now. Although it sucks coming from a smaller school I like to root for the top guys!
Have to list off some of the favorite teams obviously (in no particular order):
ASU, U of Arizona, Cal Poly, UC San Diego, UC Berkley, CU Boulder, Navy, Army , Air Force, Texas A&M, UT Austin, Virgina, Florida State, Illinois (gotta root for my home state), MSU, U of Florida

Last time I completed down in Tuscaloosa it was a scorcher. That said it's nice to be surprised. I'm guessing only a few of the top 10 guys will get a 2 min penalty, let's say 3 guys? I think the relay thing is really cool, but you have to have some sort of epic story/scar/crash especially knowing our triathlete handling skills ;) . Two multi-person crashes on the draft legal relay? Only guessing. This has been an unusual year weather wise so I'm sure a lot of people across the country who normally aren't afforded the chance to put down solid miles during the "spring" have had a really solid training season. I think there will be a lot of competition so I'm guessing the winning time will come just under 1:57:xx (men's). I'm going to say 2:09:xx for the women.

Men's Winner: Dustin Mclarty (still in school or graduated?) or Rudy Kahsar
Women's Winner: not sure, repeat performance by Kaitlin Shiver?

Good luck to all those competing!

I just don't really understand the desire to compete in a predominantly undergraduate sport once one is ''finished.'' I did collegiate bike racing and once I graduated I felt like it was time to move on; I was not in college anymore.

To be honest I at first really hated the 28 year olds who would show up and try to race collegiates. I didn't view it as fair. This was 2 years ago. But now I do realize it just gets the most out of us. Racing pros like Mcclarty shows us what racing some mid-tier pros can do compared to us directly. It's good for talent development. Now I know everyone thinks Mcclarty and Kahsar are clear chances, but they're going to be whooped by a 19 year old. I'm excited to watch that unfold. With about 10+ pros on the start line I have zero complaints over who should be, and shouldn't be in the race. It's just at that level now. Personally I'm very stoked to see how I do compared to guys who are 28 and hold their elite license. I know it will be humbling, but it might also give me some feedback.

In regards to the women's race it's interesting to me to see zero information out right now about why some of the top racers(whom haven't graduated) are no longer on the starting line. Looks like an issue that might need to be addressed. However the girl who won MCTC's she's going to be the winner. I'm fairly certain she went there for funzies, according to her blog and dominated the field.

Personally and I'm sure a lot of guys will echo this; we would've loved to have you there. The field depth this year is incredible. I've been talking to guys who are going to go the winning time from last year, or better and they know they probably won't even be top 10. It's anyone's day and I'm rather sure a runner vs. triathletes is a challenge most guys our age would relish. It's not like I personally would hold much of a chance but it would be clear which areas need to be improved to get to that level. Plus it just makes for a more exciting race.

I have trouble seeing anyone beating Rudy, even though the field is crazy fast. McClarty, Ryan Bice, Chris Braden, Ben Kanute will all be there, and on a great day one of them might do it. Where is Verzbicas, though? He would have a chance as well…

god i would have loved to do this race again...sadly med school consumes my existence.

i'm not sure how many of last years top 5 are coming back this year, but its hard not to look at kahsar/mclarty for the win.

kahsar can fuckin bike..is he still an amateur? he better not be...the guy blew by me up a hill last year like i was going backwards. and as for mclarty, its really fun being 1:15 down to someone after the swim...

I don't see how Bice would've qualified? Nor has lukas. No offense to either they're great guys but Bice was dq'ed from the only race where he had to make it, and lukas didn't even attend.

Kahsar went pro. First year though. Drew Scott is being overlooked on this board, that's interesting.

Pretty sure he was on the list of "5 new pros to watch in 2012" that USAT posted a while ago.

Meh, my skin is pretty thick, no offending here :-)
I just really like the team aspect, which is pretty much absent (at least from what I've seen) in the AG ranks.

I have a feeling that if they want in USAT will find a way to make it happen (see the San Diego ITU kerfuffel).

Lukas can't race collegiate nationals because he is not signed up for any classes at UCCS. He is not a full time student, so he can't race. Im not sure how the other kids from elite tri acad are racing. didnt see them qualify anywhere either. thought that was a pre-requisite this year.

hahaha you sir are quite the joker!

I had the opportunity to watch McClarty at the local Cal Poly SLO triathlon last month, coming out of 55 deg. water in 17ish minutes for 1500. Damn. And I know that one girl from UCSB is pretty fast, I think she got 3rd or something last year? Anyway, one distinct memory I have is when she passed me going up Gibraltar Rd. in Santa Barbara during a sunny November saturday, I was thinking "hmmm I think I saw that girl being interviewed on tv when they were showing the 2011 collegiate nationals" haha.

Stupid young kids...don't you know real triathlon doesn't start until the 35-39 AG? Before that anybody can win if you just show up and have a pulse. It pains me to see 20 year olds gloating about winning their AG with a 2:13 Oly.

I hope this was supposed to be in pink font.

Quote:
I bet that's what CollegIate Nationals is like too

Oh wait, you admit you don't have any idea what goes on at collegiate Nationals?

Allow me to enlighten you. Collegiate nationals is the most competitive of the USAT nationals events available to amateurs (I'm excluding the elite nationals in several disciplines because that's obviously not an amateur contest). I'm serious. Collegiate nationals is fast as hell. If you haven't been, you should look at the results. Tuscaloosa is not an easy course, yet times are consistently fast there. Collegiate Nationals doesn't have "Age Groups," and the athletes at the top don't give a shit about winning an age group. I am ~top 5-10% there, I'm 21 years old, and I haven't given a shit about winning an age group since I was 15. The top 10%, maybe even top 15% regularly contend for the overall win at most local triathlons, and the guys at the tippy top are professional-caliber athletes. I don't know how much (or where) you've raced that you've acquired an opinion that the under-34 age groups are soft or sparse, but you are very, very, very, very mistaken. It is a fast fucking race. Since older people so often get to make blanket statements about younger people, I'm going to allow myself to do the same: "You people" need to learn how to use google, or athlinks, or the USAT results page, and familiarize yourself with the results/history of a race before making grossly ignorant statements such as you have just done. I don't really mean it though--this is just directed at you.

Quote:

That is close to being one of the most misguided things I've ever read on here. Just to illustrate, 6 of the top-10 at Age Group Nationals last year were college-age (<24 for the sake of the argument), and the entire podium was comprised of the same. Bragging about winning an age group is stupid anyway. In many cases, those people who are given the age group awards would not have won them had the people who received overall awards were not removed from the age-category results...Especially silly is bragging about winning your age group at age group sprint nationals--all of the fast people raced the oly distance race!! If you are an AG national champion in the sprint and your time x2 > the AG national champion in the Oly then you haven't won anything at all IMO.

My money is on Duke's girls. Jenny, Hannah, and Chelsea are fast as shit, and at least one of them is #jackedasshitalready. Chelsea beat all the men at the Lake Lure race a couple weekends ago, and I hear that Jenny is even faster!
