Collegiate Nationals 2012 Smacktalk Quote | Reply

Only another 9+ days til nationals in Tuscaloosa, better get your smacktalking hats on now!
It's going to be a wild Saturday of racing. Women's first wave at 7:30, men's at 10:30, relay goes off at 3:30
Who's in? Who's out? Who will start some smacktalk?
Who will win?
How many in the top 10 will have 2 min penalties?
How hot and humid will it really be?
Over/under 5 multi-person crashes in the draft-legal relay?

For the guys (because that's what I've been following)
1:55.xx to win and 10+ guys going sub 2 hrs
MCTC has 10 in the top 20

Ladies (yeah I don't know much about the race, enlighten me)
Fewer people passing out

Fewer penalties than last year, but still quite a few, especially the fast guys in wave 2 and 3
Early weather predictions say 80 with %50 ish humididty
Over, triathletes can't handle their bikes :-P

And the relay is going to be awesome!!

prediction 20 guys under 2 hours. some 19 year old from illinois I hear swims bikes and runs pretty fast. He might win it. some 24 year old went to grad school just for this race. he swims and bikes fast. IDK about that run. I didn't know there was a girls race.

Finally I will get a 50 minute penalty that will be removed once I'm finished with the race.

There are a lot of ladies working very hard for this race. It's fine if you don't care about them, but your message is their competition has lesser worth, which I respectfully disagree with.

That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying their coverage thus far has been less then the guys.

Are you saying I'm wrong? That's fine, but I'm fairly sure their coverage of the women's race has been a lot less. Much like abu dhabi does or ironman. Really that's the only point I'm making.

The internet makes it easy to misunderstand tone. I'm sure that's what's happened here: you care about the women's race, but because the coverage hasn't been as strong as the men's coverage, you joked that there isn't a women's race at all. I now see that's what's happened- thanks for the explanation.

Who's your pick to win? Top 10? I really am curious. Add some value if you got the knowledge. If I don't know anything about the women's race I'm not going to be interested in it beyond the people I know and I want to be interested.

I don't think anyone can assess the Top10 accurately. Due to the DQ's at Havasu (swim course buoy cutting), no one can properly compare MCTC's best. It's going to be fantastically exciting to watch.

Stupid young kids...don't you know real triathlon doesn't start until the 35-39 AG? Before that anybody can win if you just show up and have a pulse. It pains me to see 20 year olds gloating about winning their AG with a 2:13 Oly. I bet that's what CollegIate Nationals is like too

http://www.weather.com/...il/USAL0542?dayNum=9 UV index of 9. I'm going to talk to our NECTC board about getting a conference-wide sponsorship from Coppertone before this. At least it's not like last year where most of us had snow on the ground when we left. I know I've been able to wear shorts 3 or 4 times at least in CT this year.

You sir, are not properly prepping yourself for this race. It's gonna be hot and humid, people will be melting out on that course! I for one have been doing all my runs inside at YMCA where it is about 127 degrees wearing two layers of under armor cold weather gear, and wringing out my shirt for water as an aid station.

This race is more or less a training race to see where my fitness is going into the season, but now suddenly I am very pumped and look forward to having my dreams crushed come next saturday. You read that correctly.

Anyone up for a beer mile after? Always a good way to cool down from the race and warm up for the evenings festivities!

way better training in massachusetts then last year. we were able to ride outside throughout the whole winter. spring break in the 70s-80s up here gave us a brief glimpse of what weather will be like in alabama. i for one am hoping for a hot day out there. my teammates not so much. i want it to be a sufferfest. may the best man/ woman win. good luck all

The fact that graduate students can do this makes me care way less. Oh, congrats, you're 25+ and have been racing as a pro for 3 years and you won collegiate nationals??! Nice work!

Not.

I think undergrads only.

But still, I have my picks for the womens. Don't know much about guys. What's the general, "realistic" consensus on dudes? I know and have trained w/ a couple from the top 10 from '11 and they're likely in better shape than last year.

Well that's what you get when college students get into a hobby. In order to get as much support as they can, they let all "college" students race. I'm betting CU will take podium again this year... but I kinda hope not :)

I'm 25 (and in law school, no training like a pro here), but I haven't been racing pro, or racing for that matter for 3 years. I think it gives a good bridge for the younger guys to be able to race some of the pro guys before they make that next step. Plus it makes for a faster, more exciting race. That and AG racing at 25 isn't exactly exciting.

Guys race is going to be stupid fast, even with the heat. There are probably 15-20 guys with a legit shot at the top 10, and probably 10 that have a shot at the podium, going to really come down to who shows up and can handle the heat.

Care to share your womens picks?

Re: Collegiate Nationals 2012 Smacktalk [ston_ar] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

Why is AG racing at 25 not interesting? Most 25 year olds that are racing do said racing in AG races and seem to find it ok...

I was making a sweeping generalization, obviously. I'm not trying to offend.

I'd like Kathrine Warren and Erika Erickson to be on the podium. Hallie Blunck is in good shape too, but LC is more her strong suit I think.

Maybe I'm biased. I got to spend a camp with them a couple of weeks ago in Cali. I seem to remember someone mentioning the 2011 top 5 OA will not be there? That leaves the door pretty wide open.

So you'd rather watch a bunch of dudes run around in spandex as opposed to a lot of 18-22 year old fit women? Hmm.
