there's a prerequisite that you know how to spell the venue before registering for a hotel

The Courtyard Marriott is the closest to the venue, it's just across the street.

We stayed (are staying) at the Holiday Inn Downtown. They are pretty triathlete friendly, great with bikes, opened up breakfast super early on race day and have great staff. The YMCA is just over the road for pool / hot tub and it is an 8 minute walk to transition - which is just enough to get away from the IM circus if you prefer it a little more relaxed. I'd be happy to come back here.

Looks like many of the downtown hotels have already filled up.

I actually stayed at a best western only a few miles away (only about a 7min drive) and had no issues since there was an abundance of parking downtown right near the race site.

Because Ironman bulk books them and then sells them through the IM site, at least that's what happened last year. That and people reserving 5 hotels and then cancelling shortly before the 48hr period .... Kind of messes it up for everyone else.

I was thinking about this on the drive home today, after sticker shock checking out of my downtown hotel.

If I had to do it over again, I'd stay pretty far outside town and save a boat load of money. This is not like 20,000 or 40,000 thousand participants in a popular marathon. This is a couple thousand competitors. The city roads and parking can easily handle that volume without difficulty or backup. I was amazed at the amount of close-in parking available throughout the entire weekend and traffic was never an issue.

So save hundreds and get a hotel outside town. Besides, booking a downtown hotel sets you up for the risk that the hotel gets a "better offer" and boots out all the confirmed guests, just weeks before arrival. Do a search on "SHERATON READ HOUSE" and you'll see how Sheraton screwed hundreds of IM competitors holding confirmed reservations.
