Chasing the Olympics - Viking Life video

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my latest video here in the forum. It's been a pretty intense start to the year and after some decent races last year, I've found myself suddenly in the running for an Olympic spot. This is a dream come true obviously, and I'm attempting to continue sharing my experiences as the year goes on.

This question is the theme behind the latest Viking Life:
"What are you changing and doing differently now that it's an Olympic year?"
Answering this question over and over again is making it a constant exercise to stay relaxed and keep to the plan that's gotten my team mates (Joe Maloy, Greg Billington) and I this far. Joe and Greg are currently sitting 1-2 in US Olympic qualification, I'm sitting 3rd.

I hope you enjoy the video!

This glimpse into the "World of Eric" is another great video demonstrating your ambitions and drive. I particularly liked seeing that you've been surrounded by many like minded people with similar focus and work ethic. While it may not be a glamorous life it certainly does seem like you're striking a good balance. I wish you all the luck in your Olympic dream and personally I'll be routing for you to be toeing the line in Rio in August.

I liked what you said about people saying that, b/c it's an Olympic year, all of a sudden you're going to start caring more, when in reality you had to have been caring a huge amount to start with, or else you would not even be in contention. As you said, it is possible to care too much which tends to result in a person becoming too intense and prob over-trained. Very nice video!!!

Thanks!

It's been a struggle this entire year really, and the feedback I've gotten from other pros seems to confirm what we're feeling. I think it's actually a process that anyone who turns professional at anything, will go through several times. The first step is when your hobby becomes the thing that MUST pay the bills.. That gets a lot of people. The second is when you actually achieve part of what you set out to do (or maybe everyone else tells you that "you've made it"), potentially causing you to loose the chip on the shoulder. Ultimately, when you get near the top of the sport, the thing I hear a lot of established athletes talk about is falling into the trap of trying not to disappoint versus continuing to look forward.

I think it's a career-long process. Trying to find the tipping point where additional focusing on the sport becomes detrimental rather than beneficial.. Just my thought anyway. I'm stoked you liked it!

Is that Paulo in the video when someone is asking a bunch of questions and he sort of sighs and says "just get it done guys"

Awesome, great video.

I really loved the Van building video that followed it, nice skills.

Cheers,

Maurice

Yep, that's Paulo! The only chance I really have to get him on camera is when the camera is on my bike and happens to be facing him. That's the philosophy in a nutshell.. "think less, do more".
