Challenge/ Rev3 transition 'slot' dimensions
Quote | Reply
Hi,
Does anyone know what the dimensions are of the Rev3 transition slots which are constructed of dimensional lumber. Im racing in Maine at the end of the month and wanted to plan ahead to figure out what would fit. Thanks!!

You can fit a 28mm tire in there if that's what you are after.

Actually, I was looking for the 'gear' space area. Not the tire width; but thank you. That is helpful as well.

That was a little bit less useful, but I suppose it answers the question.

I don't have the exact dimensions but unless you are trying to stash an entire giant transition bag there, there is plenty of room to put anything you need

I was going to place a short/smallish laundry basket so that I can dump the wetsuit in and not have it falling over onto my neighbors stuff and getting in the way. I was also going to put some straps on it so that it can work like a backpack transporting it to/from the TA. But I wanted the opening big enough so that it did not take much effort to get something like a wetsuit in it. I think that it is something like 7" x 14" but I would like to get a more precise measurement.

Perhaps this will help you - my bike racked at Knoxville:

so looking at these being made of dimensional lumber, it looks somewhere in the area of 18" x 27 " based on a 1.5" nominal width of the boards. Sound about right?

That sounds about right but I don't think they were quite that wide. I will say this: Loved this setup WAY more than the usual rack.

Here is a different angle:

Not sure if it is consistent at all Challenge/Rev3 events, but last year at Rev3 Cedar Point - the only thing allowed at your bike rack was your bike. Everything else goes into transition bags. (then again, maybe helmet and shoes were allowed near your bike, can't 100% remember). But definitely not running gear. That was all in transition bags, and the expectation was that you left your wetsuit with your transition bag, and a volunteer put it away for you.

Edit to add: Found picture of pre-race setup:

That would be because you're talking the full. Half distance athletes leave their stuff by their bikes. And is the set-up for all of the other events.

You were allowed to have your stuff next to your bike for the half. At least for 2013 and 2014

I asked this question to the Challenge staff and they replied 2 feet between each bike facing the same direction. There are cubby holes between the bikes, but you are not required to put your things there. Your stuff can expand out towards the aisle, just be kind and not have it expand out into the aisle.

The reason that I ask is that there was a gentleman next to me who had a penalty for his stuff getting spread out in the transition area. My understanding from him is that it was kicked by another competitor and then got in the way of yet another competitor. If there is a receptacle for your 'stuff' then this problem would be moot.

I've done 2 Rev 3/Challenge races. Ballpark I would say a little bigger than 1.5 feet wide by 2 feet deep, plus you have as much grass as you need in front of it and under your bike just like when your rack is a metal "A" frame.
