Central Park Road Bike Hire
Visiting Manhattan on business, looking to get a couple of decent rides in. Is there anywhere on/near Central Park that rents reasonable road bikes?

Maybe someone else will chime in about the situation with bikes in Central Park, but there has been a lot of trouble with cyclists and pedestrians in the park over the past few years and a clamping down on the speed limit for cyclists. See what you can find out about riding in the park before you make your plans.

Check out The Domestique http://www.thedomestique.cc
He rents BMC SLR-01 for the half day or full day. He will also guide you out on rides if you want to hit something other than Central Park.

Thanks for the pointers. Are there any good alternative low-traffic circuits that I should be considering?

get to the park nice and early and I am sure you will have a memorable experience. I've only run in the park before work when I have been there on business (lots of times) but just seeing that number of cyclists and runners was a real surprise the first time and is still cool.

+1

Try to finish before 7:30 or so on weekdays. The park opens to traffic around then and tourists start to show up. Unfortunately no good ideas but google some bike shops in the area and they might rent

I'd second the Domestique. He's a friend of a friend and his bikes are good quality and he is a sound guy. I'm sure if you didn't want to pay for the guidance he would at least point you in the direction of some rides.

I've not used them but there are always tourists on bike n roll hybrids. They rent lower end road bikes too: http://bikenewyorkcity.com/...ssid=0&equipid=3.

Some notes on Central Park:
  • Central Park is a cluster**** unless you go very early in the morning (6am-ish).
  • If you go later in the day you really can't ride hard safely because there are: dog walkers, pedestrians crossing the road without looking, bike tourists with suspect handling skills riding while they take photos on their phone, some people 'working out' and riding like lunatics, car traffic, horse carts.
  • The police and park ranger presence is pretty heavy (normally 2 vehicles visible on the 6 mile loop at any point in time).
  • The speed limit is 20mph, with some sections marked as 10mph.
  • I've not seen them speed gun people or heard of them ticketing for speed, but I have seen loads of tickets given out for people who jump red lights.
  • Generally the chances of being ticketed seem to be dependent on what kind of mood they are in.

If I ride it, I normally just take it as a fairly easy ride and sometimes sprinting up the inclines if it's not busy.

Other rides:

- West side highway up to the George Washington Bridge, then go north on 9W. You could stop in at Strictly Bicycles on the NJ side of the bridge for directions/suggestions (easiest ride to get to, and easily the most popular route)
- Ride or take the train out to Brooklyn and ride east towards Montauk (not much traffic once you're out of Brooklyn)
- Ride out to Brighton Beach/Coney Island (will be some traffic areas you'd have to go through)
- Ride out of NYC north to Captain Lawrence brewery

Shoot my a PM if you want people to ride with.

I ended up doing a guided ride with The Domestique/Jimmy. Really good stuff, I just brought helmet and my shoes, he had the BMC set up to the numbers I gave, bars and gels ready to go and off we went to Nyack. It was the day of my flight out so it was good to have a guide and not get lost somewhere in NJ!
