yes, they can fit DA9000 chainrings.
why you would need such big chainrings is beyond me though. unless you're a pro rider you really dont need such big ratios.

+1 to all of this.
But ultimately it's your bike and you can put whatever you want on it.

Honestly I figure if I train on a 55/42 this year I'll force my little legs to MF'ing grow lol. After going from 50/34 to 53/39 now to 55/42 I have confidence I'll improve my bike split. Maybe I'm delusional with studying top athletes and my own progress, but we'll TRY it.

If the answer is never except downhill, then skip the 55/42.

Honestly I didn't spend a ton of time on 50-11 either. Not trying to be argumentative just trying to learn. I have improved a lot on 53/39 rings.?

why not just keep the 53-39 and use the smaller gears then? you'll save a bunch of cash.

Still have the 50t?
I'm looking for a 6800 50t ring.

You can use it to move the ratios closer together or to target a particular ratio you can't otherwise achieve (say, for example, you're always wanting to be between your 14 and 15). Rather than an 11 start with a 12 (58/12 is approximately equal to 53/11). Each successive gear will be slightly closer to the previous one than it would have been with a smaller chainring.

Wiggins broke the hr record on 58-14
Which is equalant to
53-13
50-12
Given straight chain line.
That said I will report back in about 1 yr regarding how this experiment went.

did you set a calendar reminder?

I did. Curious if OP gained more watts from using Bradley Wiggins' gear ratio.

I know a lot of pro triathletes, semi-pro cyclists, and a few pro cyclists.
None of them use chain rings that big.
It's not the size of the chain rings, but how you train that matters.

it's not entirely* about gear ratios... tony martin has indicated his 58t front ring isn't only for massively fast downhill sections, but importantly a straight chainline while even on flats. Track riders usually prefer the same ratio with bigger chainrings and cogs because it doesn't bind the chain around bends as much.... hence also why the 14/15t oversized pulleys that companies are selling now. In no way am i implying this is the OP's reason but straight chain line and also big cogs (less bend to chain) can save a handful of watts.
