CSS swimtest explained

Check this youtube video how Paul Newsome from Swimsmooth very well explains the Critical Swim Speed principle.

I'm using this Finis Tempo trainer for a while now and found it a perfect tool for pacing. I did summarize this here in this article.

Swim smooth is selling this tempo trainer for a good price : here

Just me but I use a pace clock and adjust accordingly. If the clock is on the ends of the pool, I get to practice sighting as well when I look at it while still swimming IF for some reason my perceived effort/pace is off.

Agree bringing threshold pace up is priority for triathletes.

you're right in some sense with regards to the pool pace clock, but according to me, the tempo trainer is much more accurate.
It's not easy to determine pace exactly if you want to swim within a second (mainly if it's getting difficult).
Don't know why, but that Tempo Trainer did sometimes help me push harder..

I didn't watch the link you included so perhaps it's mentioned in there. How is a pace clock not accurate down to the second?
For interval sets I know when I leave and what time I come in at. For longer sets I can tell my 50/100 splits by looking at the clock going into a turn.
If I am missing your point chalk it up to too much turkey yesterday

I'm a non US guy, no turkey for me yesterday :-)

The pace clock itself is accurate, no doubt about that, but I find it sometimes difficult to swim let's say 1'45"/100m by looking at the pace clock only.
I'll very often end with a couple of seconds difference (slower or faster).
The tempo trainer can be set that it generates a beep every time you are supposed to turn. This has shown to be easier (for me at least).

I agree. Best $50 I spent on swim gear in the last 5 years.

Side note... set pacer to 17.00 and you can swim 1.08 hundreds on 1.25 without hitting the reset button.

Some people cant see analog clocks well. Tempo trainer can be set by 1/100 sec.
