CALGARY 70.3 2017
I am signed up for the Calgary 70.3 in July 2017, and had booked accommodation at the host hotel Grey Eagles Resort and Casino. I have just had an email from the hotel telling me that my accommodation has been cancelled. I called them and asked why, and was told the race was moving and they were no longer the host hotel.

I have emailed the race organizers to ask what is going on. Does anyone have any information about where the race is moving to or is this some sort of communication screw up?

That's weird. That race is on my radar. Suppose they will announce it soon, if what hotel said was true.

Don't be so sure. Remember how long it took WTC to admit that the Texas course was going to be changed?

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

That's odd - even last week (Nov 10), Ironman Calgary was tweeting about Grey Eagle being their host hotel...

That said, we stayed there when we did the race in 2015 and I didn't particularly care for the hotel. A change might not be a bad thing.

I received the following email from the race organizers.

Alberta Transportation has informed us that the IMYYC bike course we have used in past years will not be allowed this year, due to new construction planned for the Stoney Trail ring road. We were recently informed of this and have been scouting out new bike and run courses that are safe, proper distance, scenic and fast. We believe we have found a terrific alternative and we plan to release this information shortly.

You are being notified since you booked accommodation at the Grey Eagle Resort under the Ironman Calgary room block. Since the new route will no longer be able to finish at Glenmore Park we have had to search out a new host hotel. We understand that you may have received notice today that your room registration has been cancelled. Please be assured that we will have details on the new accommodation and new route published and sent to all registered athletes in the coming days.

Please accept my apologies for finding out about these changes in this way, we had planned to roll out comprehensive route and accommodation information; however, the Grey Eagle's registration system sent out the notification automatically when the room block was cancelled.

Please watch for more information on the new course and new accommodations in the days to come - I think you will be excited about the changes - we sure are!

It is interesting that even the race organizers want a fast course.......

Road closure due to construction. That makes sense. As long as they don't take the swim back to Ghost lake. That was the coldest swim I've ever done in racing.

I drove the 1A past Ghost Lake this year. Even 3 years after the floods there is a surprising amount of debris in that lake... it make take many more years before it's safe for a triathlon.
Besides, the transition area was terrible, and the distance between T1 and T2 was ridiculous.

Yeah the swim exit and T1 were awful there. I left my car parked at the fenced-off housing division near T1 in 2012. They opened their gate for us and had a security guard there. That was the official parking solution for those that drove to swim. Came back on a race shuttle after the race. The housing division closed their gate and the security guard was gone. I had to throw my bike over the 6 foot fence, and climb the fence, to get to my car. At least the gate opened automatically from inside so I was able to drive away. The rest of that race (scenic bike, T2, and the run) made up for it. Calgary really is a gem of a race. But swim exit and T1 were a clusterfuck.

My 2 cents: How about swimming in the Heritage Lake and then riding Dunbow road to do the Road to Nepal with a T2 in the Priddis Valley Rd area and then finishing with a run in the roads/trails to the Azuridge hotel.

Just got the email from the race about the new bike route.
It's great the race is all in one location, but riding across the flat prairie is going to be pretty dull.
The construction on the route will likely take several years I bet.
