Bike position

I was doing an FTP test on my trainer last night. I noticed (perceived or real) that I could put more power to the pedals sitting up as opposed to aero. My numbers seemed to back this up while watching my display. As you know, during an FTP test, you cannot think clearly due to the suffering going on at the time.

I'm wondering if everyone experiences this to a degree or if I have a bad fit. I consider my bike fit to be pretty solid.

Normally as your hip angle closes up your power production goes down. This can be trained so it’s not as big of a deal. But what you experienced wouldn’t be surprising.

That said a good fit will make up for the majority of the loss of power when looking at the total package.

It is not uncommon to be able to hold slightly higher wattages out of aero even with a great fit. The question is what kind of variance are you seeing? Small % I wouldn't worry it. If you are big % off I would asses fit.

My power is higher on my road bike than my tri bike, but I am still faster on my tri bike because it is a more efficient position.

There is also google. Or you can just help answer the question. There are few questions that are asked on here that haven’t been asked before in some shape or form.

Lots of other people experience this, and they mostly all have sub optimal fits.

When your tri bike fit is optimized and you have spent minimal time adapting, you should feel more powerful when going from a sitting up position down to the extensions. If you don't you're too low, too far set back, riding too long of a crank, or some combination of all 3. That's it.

The idea behind 100° of hip angle is that it is the best place to pedal, regardless of the type of bike. That is what you should try to achieve in the aero position. Too much knee flexion at the top of the stroke can get in the way of this sometimes, but if you think you are optimized at that roughly 100°, and sitting up to 110° (or whatever) feels better, we'd call that a clue.

Too many riders accept too many lost watts in aero.

Do you spend a lot of time on TT vs road bike?

I am atypical based on how others typically respond to this one.

But for for my first 4 years cycling I only rode a TT. Even with 3 years mostly a road bike, I hop on TT and almost immediately put out higher watts.

Can never get road bike with higher FTP, just like i can’t get vo2 max power as high on the TT

I wouldn’t worry too much about it

Thanks for the responses (the snarky remark notwithstanding)...

I would say the loss was 10 watts in aero. I ride my TT all the time so the change from aero to sitting up was on my TT. It has been 3 years since I have had a fit. I will pay close attention for the next few weeks and maybe go back for another fit.
