Bike Fit, Kansas City
I'm new the ST forum, and looking for some advice.....

I'm going to buy a new tri-bike soon, and want to get one that fits properly this time. I'm getting back into the sport after some significant time off for injuries. I live near Kansas City, but travel to St. Louis about once a month. Is going to a FIST-trained outfit (Maplewood in St. Louis) worth the trip or is there a shop in the KC area that is worth checking out?

I move every couple of years, so I'm really interested in a shop that can set me up properly on a bike, but not as worried about whether they'll remember me in 3 years.....I won't be here.

Thanks for the help!

Ray

I live in the KC area and run into the same problem as you. The only place that I know that does anykind of tri fitting is Bikesource in Overland Park/Olathe. It is off of 135th street. Although, you have to pay for a bike fit in addition to buying the bike there. I believe they charge $150 for a bike fit, but I am not sure if that includes cleat/shoe position. They have a specialist there who does, but he is not FIST certified.

As for Maplewood in St. Louis, I have heard nothing but great things about them. So if you want the FIST, the 3+ hour drive might be worth it.

Good luck!

Wheelers in K.C.

Maplewood in St. Louis. I know many people who have used Maplewood with great success.

Wheelers closed shop about a year and half ago. Just an FYI.

Thanks for the input. Since I get to St. Louis about once a month, I'm inclined at this point to go with Maplewood.

I visited the shop the last time I was there and they have a pretty good selection of bike brands (Trek, Merlin, QR, and now Litespeed) on the sales floor. The price for a FIST setup isn't much if the payoff is good, and I searched this forum for any comments on them......everything seems positive. I'm really concerned about getting set up properly this time, so hopefully this will turn out to be a smart choice.

Without question, the Trek store on shawnee mission pkwy. You need to make an appt for it, can't just walk in. Costs around a hundy, but they won't pressure you to buy a bike from them or anything. In fact, they'll give you a copy of all the measurements if you want to go buy a bike & get it setup elsewhere.

I got fitted in the spring on my old bike, then bought a bike of ebay last month. I took new bike in & they set it up for me based on the prior measurements, tweaked it a little to fit the new bike. Probably spent 75 minutes on it/me, and I walked out with no charge.

Thats to bad . I looked my first tri bike there. No one carried tri bikes and I drove to Wheelers for a look at a Cannondale T700 (?) might have been M700 . It was a 650 wheeled tribike. They were very helpful. I have always heard great things about them.

I used Bikesource in Overland Park, and they have treated me really well. (October 2005) The fitter that does their Tri stuff is named Jeff, and he is a really well-tri-educated guy. He is a Serotta fitter, but has knowledge of FIST and the BigSlam methods. I walked in carrying my FIST documents from slowtwitch.com, and we merrily debated the different topics as we went through the fitting. We spent about 2 hours on the fitting process, trying different positions. (Using a Computrainer for part of it) He ended up setting me up at about 76 degrees with about 9-10cm of drop.

I then fiddled with my position all year, trying different positions about every month or so until I settled on one for racing. I ended up doing most of my racing at 80 degrees with 12-13cm of drop. At the end of my planned races I switched back to 76 degrees and 10-11cm of drop for the hell of it, and I FEEL more powerful. I am not as aero, but not bad. I seem to have went full circle and then returned to about the set-up that Jeff gave me.

Their shop carries Cervelo, Cannondale, Kuoata, and Specialized Tri bikes. If you live in KC, I would drop in on Jeff and at least talk to him about fitting and pricing. The first time I talked to him our conversation lasted about an hour. I then knew I liked the dude, and set-up an appointment for the fitting. My $0.02.

The Trek store in Shawnee or Summit Bikes in Lee's Summit are the places to go.

I live in Olathe, Ks and after doing a little research found Maplewood the only real option closest to the KC area. The did a great job and have a much better selection of tri-bikes if you are also looking for that. I live very close to a few bike shops in the area and could never find anyone that specialized or with much knowledge in tri-bikes like Maplewood has.

I highly recommend Maplewood in St Louis. I bought my Tri Bike from Maplewood back in April. Tim Ray is Maplewood's FIST certifed fitter. Make an appointment and see him. He's an experienced fitter and will work with you as long as it takes. I feel very good on my tri bike and am very happy with the fit. Tim also fixed my position on my road bike and significantly improved my comfort. Maplewood recently became an Elite dealer. I bought an Elite Razor from them as my tri bike. Elite is definitely worth looking at. Maplewood had a couple Elite frames in stock last time I was there a few weeks ago.

I realize this thread is nearly a decade old- but I have the same question. I have a P2 that I have been riding for a few years, never been fitted though, might want to invest in a better headset as well. I figure the first thing to do is checking the fit. Thanks for any input.

I'm a pretty big fan of Elite Cycling in Leawood. I get all my service done there. They are a certified Retül fitter. I've never personally had a fitting there, but I have heard nothing but good things from others who have.

Also, I should probably mention that the owner of Elite is named Jeff, and I believe he is the same guy Little Bill mentions in his post above, from before he started his own shop.

Elite Cycling in Leawood is the answer. Jeff uses the Retul system. Elite stocks Cervelo, Felt, Scott, Giant and a few others. I got fitted there and ended up with a Shiv (which he does not stock). I also like Epic Bike and Sport in NKC, but it's a Specialized shop.

BikeSource in OP does the BG Fit type fitting, Elite Cyling in Leawood, Jeff, does the ReTul fittings. Mike at BicycleFitRX, does a very good, in depth fit as well. He actually comes to your house, and does the entire fit there with laser levels and such.

I have done my own fits but road race in KC and hear quite a bit through the grapevine on fitting. I will agree that Elite cycling or Bike Source are your only real options, bike source has one fitter who is pretty good at the leawood store (tall lean guy, cannot remember his name at the moment, if you are interested i can get his name). I have also heard good things about elite cycling, though i do not care for the store.

Elite cycling just rubbed me the wrong way. I went in a few months ago in jeans, polo, cowboy boots and was looking at the felt AR's and S2/S3, nobody says a word to me for 15 minutes (none are busy). Then one employee comes over and makes a joke "those bikesare for racers, can i point you towards something you could use?", assuming i have no clue what i am looking at without speaking a word to me. I guess cat 3's don't wear cowboy boots? Anyways i decided to shelve ordering a bike from them and too my business elsewhere.

I went in a few weeks ago for a second time and i had a tee shirt for a local stage race, i simply wanted to see how quickly they would pay attention. Right away the owner came over, the last time he did not say a word. I have worked before at an LBS, you never judge a customer by what they are wearing. I will never forget selling a 13k project one to a guy in a torn up tee shirt, old jeans, and crocks. Just so happened he was a local cat 1 just finished with yard work and decided to pull the trigger that afternoon.
