I don't get it. That level of wattage & that speed up those mountains, and yet his heart rate stays mostly below 140bpm.

I go up a 9% grade for 400 meters and my heart's ready to explode out of my chest.

So unfair.

(Please pass the cheese plate my way so I have something to go with my whine...)

I noticed the same thing. I hate how part of me wants to be in awe of this and think it is the signature of an amazing athlete, and the other part of me just thinks it's too good to be true....naturally.

Don't forget these guys by now are very fatigued which means they would struggle to get their HR up anyway (also they are very very fit). One of the sky riders from two years ago (cant remember name, he's their good classics rider and not Bossan Hagen) posted his TT file, he placed top 20, but his HR didnt get above 165 (this was the 2nd last stage).

Im noticing at altitutde (in Boulder now) I can't get my HR above 180, pushing even at Max. I can average 180 for a sprint bike leg

Chew on this with that cheese :)
Maybe it's a suppressed or "sticky low" HR due to accumulated fatigue 10days in?

We don't know his FTP or max HR so it's difficult to tell if 140 is low or high. It varies wildly from person to person.

Not saying it's not impressive, just out of context. The power readings are more absolute however.

To my mind the most impressive thing is that his first hour, real the last 3/4 of the first hour was his highest power. When ever I'm in for a long day the last thing I want to do is hammer early then have to still go hard.
