Anyone know if he has some form or running background. Or is he just crazy and did it Forrest Gump style.

haha

I don't doubt he's got the engine...but that just seems like a lot of pounding for someone who's just doubled his total running miles for the year. Freaks!!!

Someone is going to be very sore tomorrow.

At the very least his pacing was not impressive, so I don't feel too bad.

I'm surprised. I see lots of top tier cycling pros post their Strava runs and they're basically jogging and complaining that their legs will hurt for a week.

A friend of mine was a former national team cyclist (4th at the Olympic Trials). He'd retired years earlier, but could still just roll off the couch and click off 6:00 miles.

yeah but I bet they were jogging at 7 or 8 minute miles on day 1 vs like, 11 minute miles for us average joes when totally untrained!

Agreed. In 2013 I ran a sub 17 min 5k but stopped running and started riding again as a Cat 1 this year. Went out a few weeks ago thinking of running 3-4 miles... Had to stop after ten minutes because my legs were itching so much from the pounding. Then had to keep stopping after that 'cause everything was itching and aching. Wasn't breathing hard in any way and 7:30 pace felt easy enough aerobically, but man, over the next three days... everything ached. It was horrific.

And that was just 3 miles from someone who used to run 50-60 miles a week. A full marathon with no training sounds utterly insane! Especially at that speed!

You can't cheat running. You can have a 2h30 engine, but the pounding will kill you if you don't put in the miles.

I've ridden with him a few times (live around the same area) and like many pros he is an aerobic freak of nature and all around cool guy. I'm not too surprised, but I find it funny that he makes it look like he just rolled out of bed one day and decided to run a marathon faster than most people can ever achieve with years of dedicated training. To his credit, he really puts the work in on the bike and I've heard that he used to do competitive running in his teenage years, so this isn't entirely foreign territory.

Well, if he'd run the full distance, he wouldn't have been sub-3.

he ran in high school even though he was turning pro on Kelly Benefits. good 5k guy without run training then, 17 min range.

first time i met him he was 15 and looked 12. he beat everybody in the wintergreen tt on a crappy old bike and we thought they messed up his timing.
