Barry P Running Improvement,,Whats your Best???
Quote

I have been following the BarryP running plan since Thanksgiving. I don't really know what I was doing before..... Thanks BarryP for some clarity!!! Last year I never ran more than 20-25 miles per week. I am now up to 34 per week and shooting for 40-45 avg through the season. I have a 8k in a couple weeks that I ran last year and am hoping for serious gains even without speed work.
Has anyone improved their run times long term (over a season or many seasons of training) and if so by how much? And with how much training ?
I would be happy to read some old threads if there are some.
Thanks again BarryP!!!

I did Barry's plan for about 12 weeks last winter and got to about 35 mi a week. When I started I could barely do two 7:30 miles back to back. My previous 5k record was from high school cc where I ran a 19:2x. t the end of 12 weeks I did a 4 mi time trial and went 24:44.
I was very happy with that.

x2 Your numbers are almost identical to what mine are. Started at 25, up to about 35 right now, but I have had a bad couple weeks. Used to run 3-4x a week and now its 5-6x a week. I ran almost all my runs at a very slow pace to start, anywhere from 8:55-9:10ish, and now that same effort holds around a 8:35-8:40 pace. I have not used much speed work on the program yet, but I have done a few 6 mile tempo runs and been able run well below 8:00 pace. Starting coaching in a week so this will be the last week of me following the program, but over the past few months this has worked very well for me and helped build some base for running.

I'm a 45 y/o guy who has been running for a little over a year now. I was running @ 30 mpw, same distance every day. My longest run was 6 miles. Had my last race Nov. 7, and ran 44:30 in 10k. Started Barry P program the next day. I have leveled off @ 45 mpw. Long run is 13 miles. I have a 10K race Feb. 4, and can't wait to see what the dividends are.
For what it's worth, I've only gone through phase 1. I'll try to introduce speed work after this race (phase 2). I have a 10k in March to see if the speed work makes a difference.

Wife and I started following his plan 2 years ago. I was 58 at the time and went from 2:15 HM to sub 2:00.
Wife has done much better. She went from approx 2:20 half to 2:03. She is now 57.
No injuries and feel great! Excellent plan.

I think the key for me has been the ability to stay injury free as a result of the consistant training that BarryP recommends. The consistant training has put me in a postion to challenge, not yet beat, some of the times I hit in my early 30's (I'm 47 now).
FYI, I basically quit regular running and racing from 1996-2009. Reading BarryP's stuff, when I decided to "come back", really helped me learn the value of recovery runs and easy runs.
Unfortunately for me, I did a trail race last week and sprained my ankle. I'm resigned to pool workouts for the next 3-4 weeks.

Started the plan in June of this year. July, August & September were all right at 100 miles. October November & December were at 130 miles. Although I planned to run 6 days a week, most of the time it was 5 days a week. This month will be 150 (I'm at 116 today). Did a 5k in July in 25:40. Did another in October at 23:04. Dropped 2:36 with absolutely no speedwork of any type. I am 57 and a clydesdale at 220 lbs and typically maxed out my running in the summer at 70 miles a month. The BarryP program has made me a better runner & I enjoy it more. My week now goes 8,4,8,4,4,13. All of it is at a relatively easy pace. My easy pace has decreased by a full minute since the program began. I have kept up at least 2 bikes & 2 swims a week during this run emphasis. Can't wait to see how it translates to races this season.

The BarryP plan broadly allowed me to take my marathon time from 2:59 in 2009 to 2:49 this past November. It allowed me to go from 30 mpw consistently peaking at 50 miles with a long run, to normally running 50-60 mpw and peaking at 85 miles. I've also set PRs in shorter distances (1/2 marathon, 10K, 4 mi). I hope to go 2:41:xx at some point in the next couple years to qualify for Fukuoka. It's really let me redefine what I believed was possible for me to accomplish as a runner.

Let me know how the Feb 4th and the March 10k go. My 8k last year was 32:48 on about 20 mpw. No real structure with the longest being 6 miles and a lot of short fast stuff. I have the same race on the Feb 11. I am at 34 mpw with a long of 11 and nothing faster than (7:30). Cant wait to add some fast stuff : >

In November, i read the summary forum post here about the barryp running plan.
It made perfect sense to me -- the reason i kept getting injured last year was the random long runs i would do -- i just wasnt teaching my body to handle the stress of running properly.
I decided to start running everday, and i havent stopped. I'm on day 54 in a row -- i started with 15 min runs. 7.5 mins each way seemed sooo short, but i knew what i was doing was building a base properly... 15 mins moved up to 16,17,18,19, 20 etc in the various weeks.
Now, further along, i've never felt so strong and running has never been more enjoyable. I do the 3-2-1 weeks now and i am so happy i stumbled across that forum post!
cheers

I am looking to revamp my run training and have read through many of the posts about your plans. I am just trying to figure out what my starting time/mileage should be. I am around 20 mpw right now. I was thinking about going with 10 min, 20 min, and 30 min for the 1:2:3. around an 8:30 pace. Does that seem reasonable, too much or too little? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Just curious, how did you do in the two 10k's? I'm looking at running more this winter, in the 50+ mpw range, and would love to know what impact BarryP's plan has had on others' running.

I went from never running in my life, to being injured all the time over about 1 year. Started BarryP about 2 years ago and now I have run sub 20 5k, sub 43 10k, 1:35 HM, 3:42 IM Mary. I have tons of gains left in me too! Never would have thought it possible.

I've been doing BarryP for about 8 weeks now. Before, I could only do 12-16 miles a week and if I exceeded that I would have a lot of knee pains. Now I'm at 30 miles per week with no knee pains.
Fastest 5K before was 22:02... 8 weeks later, I'm at 20:00. I think early next year I'll be in the low 19s :)
YAHHHHHHH! Love the BP training :)
Also, I got my buddy on this training program too.. He strugged with running and his best 5K was at 8:00 pace... 8 weeks later, he's now doing 7:15 pace.
p.s. I only started running this year

Following Barry P from May 2010 to November 2010 I went from an untrained 195 pounds and a 10:56/mile 5k to 178 pounds and a 3:56 at the Philadelphia Marathon.
Nov 2010-Nov 2012 was more tri-specific as I worked up to my 1st IM.
This year I went back to the Barry P plan from April to October. I went from about a 9:30 pace for >10 mile runs to a 3:26 at the Air Force Marathon.
A couple weeks before the AF Marathon I picked up Advanced Marathoning by Pfitzinger. I followed the recovery plan, and now I'm using their 55-70mpw 18 week plan leading up to my BQ attempt at DC Marathon in March. Not so surprisingly it's very similar to what Barry P lays out in his series of posts.
Without finding those posts here I don't think I ever would have stuck with running. I just never enjoyed it. But after learning how to train properly and avoid injury, it's an integral part of my life now.
Thanks Barry!

I have followed the frequency philosophy from Barrys plan for almost two years. I have done 1 speed workout since starting tri and will do them regularly when next season is closer. I find that frequency trumps all with running. Just vary the intensity based on how you feel and keep a high cadence.
5k when I started 24-25min PR as of two days ago 18:40.
I plan on crushing it at a few Rev3 races next year :)

I was in the same boat last year. Usually never more than 20 and stayed injured going hard every workout. This year I ran 30-35 almost every week, almost all easy, and I'm just shy of 1500 miles for the year. Only tempo workouts were stand-alone races. I've hit the track twice for speedwork.
Before I started BarryP late last year, my best 5k was 20:00, with a 43:30 10k, and a 1:43 open half from 2010.
Last weekend I went 18:15 in a 5k. Earlier this year I went 39:50 in a 10k, and a 1:27 open half. Not ST fast but I'll take it. More importantly I enjoy running again.
