BEST IM relay ever??

If you took Ceasar Cielo (current world record holder in the 100m free), Chris Boardman (current one hour world record holder), and Usain Bolt (current world record holder in the 100m dash) you would have one fast relay.
If it was at all possible (which I am aware it isn't) for them to hold WR pace for the distances of an IM this would be the breakdown of the relay.
Swim - 46.91 per 100m Total swim time- 30 minutes (slightly rounded up)
T1- 1 minute (why not)
Bike - 35 mph Total bike time- 3 hours 18
T2- 1 minute (why not)
Run- 2.5 min per mile Total run time- 1 hour 5 mins 30 seconds
Final Time- 4 hours 55 minutes 30 seconds
Not too shabby

Heh. 2 1/2 minutes per mile over the course of 26.1 would be damn impressive. It's also faster than most people ride.

Haha take the 200M world record track cycling record 9.572 45 mph 2hr and 30minute bike split
Edit: that would cut off 48 minutes, also if you switch the swim pace for the WR 50M free pace, then itd be prob sub 4

Another option is to switch to the super aero stream lined bikes.
The hour record for them is 91kmph. Or 56 mph. 2 hour bike split.
Now we are at roughly 3.5 hours

"On the 21st of April 2000, Eric Barone reached 138 mph at Les Arcs ski resort, France, still a world record today, using a specially designed prototype bicycle."
At that pace, he could cover the 112 mile IM distance in 48min and change. Of course, it would have to be all on a steep, straight, downhill on snow. Both ways.

This would be better:
Sun Yang or Grant Hackett (1500m world record holders)
Fabian Cancellara
Patrick Makau or Wilson Kipsang or Haile Gebrselassie (marathon world record holders)
A 100m sprinter would die in a marathon. A 100 free swimmer would not beat the 1500m guys in an IM swim. And no one beats Spartacus. Except maybe Chuck Norris.

Anyone remember the Silverman $100K (??) relay challenge to go sub 8? That didn't go so well. dismount penalty for Tyler Hamilton and meltdown on the run

Why not the fastest open water swimmer (or 1500m swimmer if those paces are easier to look up) the fastest tt cyclist and the fastest marathoner?
Cause if you actually took Ceasar Cielo, Chris Boardman, and Usain Bolt, I would put money on them not beating Crowie, or any of the top pros. Mostly because I don't think Bolt can run a marathon very fast at all, and I don't know how much Boardman has been focusing on a 100+ mi tt recently. I mean, using your conjecture, we could just say: Ummm, I think a dolphin could swim it in 10min, the fastest motorcycle racer could ride the course in 45min and a horse could run it in 1 hour.
So lets say German Thomas Lurz, who won the 5k FINA world championships every year from 2005-2010 does the swim (I didn't look up results for '11). The winning time at these events varies from low 50s to over an hour, depending on the course, but the average from 2000-2010 was roughly 55.75 min. That is a 43min pace for an Ironman swim. I think that estimate is a little on the high side, but that is still 3 min faster than the fastest Kona swim time.
Next, the bike, the trickiest one of them all, since pros don't really do 100+ mi TTs too often. The World Record is just under 30 mph for the 100 mi ride, but I don't think that would be replicated. The course record for Kona is right at 26 mph. I think we can give a true cyclist in a relay at least 1mph over the fastest triathlete, so let's play it safe and say Jens Voigt could do a 4:09, because he pretty much does 100mi tts pulling the peloton around every day at about that pace. And he's Jens Voigt.
And the easiest leg to guess the time would be the marathon. Let's say world record holder Patrick Makau (2:03:38) can run a 2:10 on the day. Then we add in 2 min for each transition (basically what Crowie did at Kona last year).
:43+:02+4:09+:02+2:10= 7:06
So a realistic 7:06 for the best triathlon relay on the planet. And sub 7 isn't too much of a stretch

I am doing this based on the lack of reality that these guys (original relay) could hold WR pace. I know Bolt couldn't run a fast marathon. But IF he could it would be one hour 5 minutes. Which would smoke Crowie. Same goes for Boardman, etc.
Now, if we snap back to reality and try to make it as accurate as possible with actual times that people have done, (Not my "fantasy"time based on multiplying) then I would have to go with your team.
I would think with that time on the right course, lets say Roth, I believe 7 hours in within reach

I am aware of the 100m runner dying and the same for a sprint swimmer comapred to a distance swimmer. I was trying to figure the fastest time based on multiplying WR splits. Knowing all well that they couldn't hold that pace

And I still win because my relay of Flipper-Motorcycle-Secretariat beats your relay.

If you tried to get a sprinter to run a marathon, he/she would tell you to go jump in a lake. Sprinters do no do that. Ever.

If sprinting speed translated into longer-distance speed, sprinters would rule the world. But, it doesn't and we don't. Damn, if only. My best 50 split from my college days is 21.2 seconds. Best 100 is 46.4, best 200 is 1:42, best 500 is 5:06. (these times are in short course yards) Notice the split-fade curve in those times.
I never really appreciated the difference between pure sprinters and distance athletes until we started measuring how we respond differently to the same workout- during interval splits of 95% effort, sprinters would go much faster than the distance guys, but end up with heart rates in the 240-260bpm range, while the distance guys couldn't get their heart rates above 200 doing the same workout. The hallmark of the pure sprinter is the ability to dig deep into oxygen debt and borrow short-term performance- I can destroy the distance guys in a short race, but they can sustain a pace at distance that would have me burning in lactic acid hell until they drop me. We have very different strengths, which call for different strategies to win different races.
My strategy for anything under a 200 is to take it out hot and bring it back with everything I have left. My best 200 splits are :48 and :54, a 6-second fade that reflects a whole lot of anaerobic debt built up in the process.
If I'm racing distance, the game is to find my anaerobic threshold and camp someplace under it, but the fact that I'm a pretty fast sprinter doesn't mean I can pace with the fast distance guys. These are different strengths. If I need a short burst of whoop-ass I've got it, but it's expensive. There's a reason sprinters don't tend to go out for distance races- if we're feeling competitive (and we always are), we'll dig ourselves deep into anaerobic debt to try to win, and lose. We hate losing. Um, and pain hurts.
I've been the swimmer in tri relays, but I've never done the other two legs in an event- this summer at age 42 I'm planning on fixing that little oversight. I should do OK on the swim, tolerably on the ride, and hopefully not awful on the run. I'm getting excited to actually complete my first tri.

Yes, but I thought it worth expanding on the reasons why sprint speed is different than distance speed. Cool line of speculation, tho- even if it did get me off on my 'sprinters are different animals' rant.

Fair enough. It was just me living in a what if fantasy world.
With that being said. I did enjoy your prior input in regards to the swim splits. Mainly because I am a swimmer and a swim geek
