they are patching that section before the race - repaving for 2013. I was out on my bike with the Public Works guys and showed them each pot hole that a bike tire would fit into! They were very surprised to see how small some of the holes were that a bike tire would fit into! Z

Tom, is the new swim course shape due to the shallow water depth? If there is no more rain in the next 3 weeks do you forsee any more potential changes as the water level drops off?

The swim course is designed to keep athletes in 4 ft or more of water. Along the shore, the lake is shallow. There is also a shallow section between the two large areas of the lake. When we first looked at the lake last year, that shallow section was about 4 ft. deep. It is now about 2 ft deep, so we will not be able to go into that other section of the lake. Polk County is working with the State of Florida to dig out a channel between these two sections of the lake in order for boats to have a route between them. For this year, we will use an M shaped swim in the section of the lake on the Lake Eva Park side. I swam the course and the only time a was able to stand up was at the start and than at about 30 years from the finish. Even if we do not see any rain during the next three weeks, there will still be plenty of water in the lake for the swim.

Looks like a M45-49 (7:00AM start) would have to leave T2 by 2:51 (9:51AM) to have a chance of running with Lance. At that time, LA will be 3:21 into his race (6:30AM start). Leaving T2 in 2:30 (9:00AM - 25' swim + 2:05 bikes including transitins), he will be around 8.5 miles (assuming 6' pace), and pass you shortly after you leave T2. I'm not obsessed with Lance. So to run wiht LA, you'll need a 30' swim + a 2:20 bike including transitions.

[If I was not able to work it into the comment above, please know that I qualified for Kona in 2003]

Tom,

We rode the bike course on Sunday. The patching on Masterpiece Road is a big improvement altho it will wait to next year's repaving to be really good. Kokomo Road and Tyner Road's repaving is spectacular. Reports I heard from other riders is that they like the bike course also.

Please have them check at the following signs (or lack of signs):

Timberlane and Masterpiece: The turn sign shows right heading west instead of left heading south to Lake Wales - its from the earlier map.

Hwy 17 & 8th Street - there is no sign. I heard several groups missed the turn and continued up Hwy 17.

Pray for rain for the lake and this will be a great event. Folks who ran said the run course is tough with the climbing.

Thanks,

Dan

Tom thanks for the practice swim on sunday, got in a couple loops in but would have liked to seen the the "M" course since I have never raced one. Ran the the run course it is "tough" since the first hill comes quickly out of T2. And it is hot. There was quite a bit of car traffic on the side streets on the back side of the course hope we do not piss them off to much.

Thanks Dan! Glad to hear that Masterpiece is better. The Polk County Public Works Dept. has been fantastic and they tried hard to get the entire road re-paved this year before the event. Our course guys will be on the roads next week marking the course and on race day we will have course signs out at each intersection. We will also have "pointer" volunteers at each turn. See you in two weeks. Z

Great to hear that you got to do the swim practice. I attended the first one, but could not be there yesterday as I'm in St. George! Our swim director is going to put out lots of buoys so that no one will get lost on our "M' dot swim. See you in two weeks. Z

One quick question about masterpiece. Most of the patching is along the right. I rode more in the middle of the lane and it was relatively smooth. Riding there there is still room for one bike to pass. Even so will I be in danger of a blocking penalty if I ride in the middle of the lane?

All depends on where other athletes are when you pass them. You can not pass on the right and you must allow others to pass you on the left

Please tell me the run course is almost completely flat? My 52 year old knees hate hills.

The Run course has one hill that you go up three times - once on each loop. There is an aid station on top of the hill that will have a special 50+ only tent with ice cold water, a few lounge chairs and some young people to take care of you! See you in Haines City! Z

1/4 mile long - not very steep, but the entire course is flat, so it look like a BIG hill. Z

it is one hill but feels like 2...check out the elevation profile...once you take a right on 10th it feels like up, down, then up...to about mile 1.6. really not bad though.
