That was a great set there Ken, you can see where the wheels came off, but your tough ass attitude would'nt let you dog the entire last set.. You are like me, take any tiny victory you can, even in a state of blowing up.You seem to be all the way back since the surgery too, how about the running and biking??
Today was my 2nd to last hard workout, tomorrow will be it until the meet next friday. Just trying to focus on a strong stroke and hold my fitness, while fine tuning some turns and breakouts..

I went deep into the hurt locker on the pain train headed to the gates of hell & did your set again. After last week's short and fast intervals, I felt it was time to hit it and see where I stand.
5x100@1:30 fairly easy wu
5x100 various kicks
and now for the pain!
500@6:40 5:44 6 pts
4x50@1:00
400@5:20 4:39 5 pts
4x50@1:00
300@4:00 3:28 4 pts
4x50@1:00
200@2:40 2:18 3 pts
4x50@1:00
100@1:20 1:05 2 pts
4x50@1:00
20 points!!
5x100 various kicks
200 cool
4200 yardages
Starting with the 300 I began getting cramps again in my toes, arches then calves. I've never had this before until a few weeks ago. When I am done, my calves twitch for hours, too.
I'm old school. I know I'm going hard when my tongue wags.

Outstanding! That 500 time probably explains the cramps later on: 5:44 is a great time to start that set.
Try to beat that score. :-)

I was trying hard to get under 5:40 for one more point. If I had, I probably would have lost that point later on, though. The 200 was also a huge effort; I really wanted that sub 2:20 and it hurt bad to get it.

You bastard. You made me go and do this. For the record, the fastest 500 I've done since February (and surgery) was about 6:15.
500: 5:58 (5pts)
400: 4:47 (4pts)
300: 3:36 (3pts; 2:19 at the 200)
200: 2:19 (3pts)
100: 1:06 (2pts)
17 points. Biggest mistake was having Sloppy Joe's for lunch about an hour before hitting the pool: I felt it starting in the 400. Bleah.

You didn't leave a trail of Sloppy Joe behind you? I'd be burping that stuff up, probably as early as half way through the 500.
I did have extra strong coffee this morning. Maybe that helped me.
Good job, though, Ken. I won't be doing this again until maybe June - where I have a good gap between races.

Today was practice tri day.
I started at the pool with plans on doing 5 x 500scy. I stopped 300y into the first 500 due to some kind of panic attack or racing HR. I rested for a minute and went back at it in a little more cautious manner. I guess I should do some kind of warm-up when I swim.
1 x 300 (4:10)
1 x 500 (7:15)
1 x 1500 (21:49)
I then hoped on the bike and rode 25 miles (1:14:09) followed by a 5k run (20:25).

Didn't sleep at all last night (school stress, I know, HTFU, cry me a river, etc.; whatever), tried to motor through 5x400. Went out too hard on #1, which combined with my lack of sleep gave the "panicy" feeling I had 3-4 weeks back, where I HAD to leave the pool. Tried #2, and finished it well within the time limit, but didn't want to set myself up for disaster mentally, and bailed. Going to do a super relaxed trainer ride to get the legs pumping and my mind in a better place. Will attack next week!

I don't like that pannicy feel I get at the early part of my swims. During the Clermont race I actually pulled up after about 200 yards and caught my breath. Once I got through that spell, the swim went well. I blamed it on the wetsuit at the time, but I think that I just need to be carefull at the beginning of my swims.

Yeah, I've had the open water panic before, but this is something that is a little different, where I can't sub anything, and just HAVE TO leave. Its the second time its happened, last time was about a month ago; always happens when I'm either super stressed or fatigued, and I was both.
I do hate that open water panic feel, though... second tri I participated in (Oly last year), I didn't put my wetsuit on right, and it was super constricting. At the start, I sprinted to the front and trailed the leader, and all of a sudden became more scared than I've ever been in my life. Literally stopped for 30 seconds, and just mailed the rest of the swim in so it didn't ruin the rest of the race. 24 minute swim! (though the course was a little long)

I had 2 goals for my lunchtime swim workout today:
1) To do the actual workout I planned to do.
2) To not have to stop 300 yards into my first set to catch my breath.
Today's set: 5 x 500 (:40) 7:13, :09, :01, :02, :06. I took the first set easy in order to meet goal #2.
Mission accomplished. We ride tonight.

Yes, I beleive Mike is still the pool manager. Maybe you know Shawn Pinder too? He's been at or near the front of the AG IM Canada swim a few times. He has a local running store, and I usually run with his store's "marathon club". Brad is often coaching at the other end of the pool during our morning masters practices. He and some of his crew were waiting on the deck for me to finish this morning.
Sunday: I had barely an hour to hit the pool so I just got in and swam for 2k scm. There were a few 2 or 3 second pauses to adjust my googles but otherwise it was a steady effort for 36 minutes (1:48/100m, roughly my race pace last year).
Today: Early morning masters swim, 2600 lcm. Coach was away today but she had left a workout with me for today. Unfortunately I forgot it at home, so I made one up. Everyone else who showed up this morning just wanted to do their own thing too.
5x100 SKIPS (Swim, Kick, IM, Pull, Swim)
3x(5x100) fr, 1-5@1:55, 6-10@2:00, 11-15@2:05
- extra :30r after each 5, trying to stay <= 1:40/100
- either making it or coming within 2 or 3 seconds
2x100, 100 fr swim + 100 kick w/ board, w/25 each fl & br k
1x200 IM (the 50 fly seems to be getting easier :) )
2x100, 100 fr pull + 100 fr swim
- the last bit was SKIPS with a 200 IM in the middle
It sounds like I may get another ~ 45 minutes in the pool this evening too.
edit: fixed the lcm - scm, ... they keep moving the bulkheads :)

Know both of them ... Mike was on the Canada Games team with me in 1997. Shawn took over Runner's Soul around the time I was moving from Pincher Creek back to Calgary. Shawn, Simon and I were top 3 at Magrath Tri in 08. Shawn was a decent breaststroke swimmer but was also good at 400 IM & distance. Mike was the miler in that family. Mike was a 15;30ish miler in scm.
