Good Morning TC.
If I run before a swim, I'm guaranteeing myself to calf and arch cramps. My lower legs are relaxed while I swim and I have those loose 'swimmer's ankles', but still get 'em.
No swim for me on Fridays, but tomorrow afternoon is the old man's 60th birthday swim. 6000 yardages, but I expect to do more... we'll see.
He changed it from starting at 1050 yards and descending by 100 yards to a double pyramid: 2x[100-200-300-400-500-500-400-300-200-100]
Post swim BBQ, but no alcohol allowed :(((

As noted in the attached thread, I blew off my race (Beaverdam OLY) this morning because the Weather Channel professed impending doom.

http://forum.slowtwitch.com/...;;page=unread#unread

By 11:30am, the storms still hadn't showed up and I felt like a putz. So, It hit the pool for my punishment set of 10 x 300 on :20RI. I'll either run or spin later this afternoon to fully wash off the guilt.

If there is any guilt left, something like Guinness should wash it away :)

Ya, it was 90 and super humid outside, the race started an hour late and II had no shade waiting for my wave, then the 4k swim was in 80+ degree water. Then it didn't help that I was there for two more day after that trying to get in some easy workouts in that weather, and I ended up feelilng really shitty after a 13 hour travel day home. But it seems to be slowly getting better, so fingers crossed that I can get in 3 or 4 more good ones soon before I have to taper for nats...

I can see how Fran Crippen must have felt, he was doing 6 more k than me in hotter water.

A friend's birthday (60th) swim tonight.
His plan was 2x[100,200,300,400,500,500,400,300,200,100] based on 2:00/100
I decided to amp it up a bit and base it on1:30 and just keep swimming until they were done. So I added on top of that 100,200,300,400,200,100,100 for 7400 yards total. It went well, in fact wasn't that hard at all except I got many and varied cramps in my lower legs, feet and toes. The last 100 was an IM and 20 yards into the fly, my legs locked up. Probably residual fatigue from last week's race.

Quick lunchtime recovery swim today, all drills.. was a beautiful 100 miler yesterday and I stupidly took off my arm warmers in as it warmed.. sporting rather fetching arm sunburn today :(

200 w/u
4 x (100 drill, 50 swim)
200 moderate
100 cool down
1100 scm

I was trying particularly to work on my catch after looking at swimsmooth over the weekend. They peg me as an overglider, which seems to make sense since my wrist drops when I extend mainly on the RHS. Tipping my hand down and not deliberately pausing to glide really increased my SPM. Despite the apparent reduction in palm pressure, it felt fast but left me tired. What sort of period are we talking for adaptation as I feel more efficient using the technique (initially - so far untimed)? would it work in a similar way to high cadence cycling, ie. slightly more cardio load but less overall fatigue?

Thanks for the support Bo, took yesterday off from swimming and just did a 5 mile run. And felt better today in the pool. also back at sea level and that always makes a difference. Less than two weeks out, so I think I'm just going to do higher quality stuff with longer rest, and overall less yardage. I have a camp next week, so will be forced to take 4 days out of the water, but I'm hoping that will just be the majority of my taper. I can get in on wed to get my feel back, then 1st race on Friday. Not idea, but will have to do.. Todays IM day:

8x100swim@ 1;30- 1;15 to 1;10
5x200@3;00, odds IM, evens pull- IM's 2;38/2;38/2;35- pulls-2;32/2;30
2x(200 back/brst@4;00/2x100IM@2;00)- bk/brst-2;48/2;47- IM's 1;17/;15/;15/13+
2x(100, 1-bk,1-brst@2;00/2x50fly@1;00) bk-1;17/brst-1;26- flys all 35flat
2x200 dolphin kick@4;00-3;36/3;28
100sd

More sprint 50s today... ugh, did not feel good doing them.

1200 W/U (500 swim, 400 pull with paddles, 4x50 build, 100 EZ)
6x(50 sprint, 6x25 EZ) 26, 26, 26, 27, 27, 28
200 EZ

I felt super explosive on the first three, and then on #4, its like a switch turned the wrong way... I just couldn't keep my turnover up. Shoulders and lats are a little tight/sore, hopefully they improve by Wednesday. Clearly upping my yardage to 9100 last week was a bold move, and the cause of this.

1000 here too, after a 9.5 mile run and before a lifeguarding class.

Being in the pool for a couple hours and not moving enough to keep warm (upside: I must be nice and lean!), not fun. 2 more days.

Given that I've registered for the Peaks to Portland swim, maybe I should post some more specific details of my workouts, slow as they may be. This way I can get some suggestions on how best to train. (You know, on the off-chance that maybe someone on the forum has experience with a 2.4 mile open water swim, or something.)

So:
500 warm up
15 x 100 @ 2:00, 1:35 to 1:28
4 x 100 easy backstroke
10 x 100 @ 1:55, fairly consistent at 1:35
4 x 100 easy backstroke, again
10 x 50 @ 2:00, consistently :40
200 easy breaststroke
4 x 100 easy backstroke cool down.

4200 yardages today, along with 5.2 mileages of running (in the vernacular).

And FWIW, my best swim in a HIM was 34:18. That was a September race, with very little swimming after May. And back then, I was struggling to hold 1:40/100. Seems that wetsuit swims are good to me, and I can swim a relatively straight line.

Pulled out my old backup goggles - the one that leave rings around the eyes (gotta go buy a pair, soon!)

4x75 wu
5x100@2:00 goal: 5s less each - 1:20/:15/:10/:05/:00 - Fastest 100 yet!! (even better: I hit these dead on pace I planned)
10x50@1:00 :29-:32
20x25@5sec rest varied stroke/kicks
200 cool

2000 sc yardages

The guards at the local waterpark use only their whistle, eyes, and waving of arms to convey a message, warning or command to the little splashers. Since they all do it, I figure it's policy to not use words, Or maybe they do the minimum necessary to keep from being fired.

I don't know if they still hold it, but they used to have a race there - dive into the deep end of the wave tank and swim out the beach end, run through the park to various slides and ride them. Swim the lazy river against the current and whatever else. I heard it was pretty taxing/difficult. I know Julie Swail won it one year.

Got in the pool today with plans to do 5 x 500. I changed my workout after the first 200.

3 x 200y (:20) 2:42, 2:46, 2:47
1 x 1500y. I didn't want to stop because I was afraid I'd change the plan again. Checked my watch at each 500 (7:11,14:29 & 21:42).

Quick change and then out for a 6.35 mile hilly run (44:09).

They posted the waves for the St. Anthony's race. I start in wave 99 or something. I go off in the last AG wave at 9:00am, just before the TNTers.

The water park race is neat. LG'ing at a water park would be different - I'm certified for pools and lakes. I hear the ocean certification is pretty treacherous.

Kids around here are on April vacation and tomorrow I've offered to take some of my professors' kids swimming. One of the girls has been hanging out in the office because they can't find childcare and she seems kinda content to sit and draw, but tomorrow will be her third day here so I offered to take her swimming if she were comfortable with it and wanted to. Another kid jumped on the bandwagon so I've got 2 tomorrow to play with. The little girl is bringing Candy Land, too :-)
