App for structured strength training
Does anyone have an app that they like for following a structured and progressive strength training program? I need to get more of it in and would like to take a class, but my schedule is too dynamic to make that work. I don't mind paying a small subscription fee.

Bridge Athletic...it's a fantastic program. I've got a discount code to try it for a month for free.

This looks amazing. But I'm afraid it's out of my budget.

My background is/was (former competitor and consultant) in strength. When I am too lazy to discuss the topic (which is almost always these days) I typically just point friends and associates to Stronglifts 5x5. It is not what I go by as my personal plan is more specific to my goals, but it is a good starting place and not too bad to just cruise through their website.

Just be warned that true strength training can potentially mess up an endurance athlete's competitive season. I train endurance and strength each week as a non-competitor, but it is a very challenging task to manage training loads and recovery times. Dare I say almost impossible to be progressive in both. In fact I am not even sure how a triathlete can manage SBR in the week and also throw in strength training, but good luck.

I do it with athletes all the time. In my experience, a solid S&C program is essential for a triathlete.

OK, I really don't get the need for an app for everything. What is the focus of your strength training?

Just using body weight, just go through a cycle of:

  • plank
  • push ups
  • deep squat plyos
  • side plank
  • pull ups
  • skip rope

using some dumbells in hands add (go as heavy as you want)
  • upward row standing on one leg at a time, pumping other leg like running
  • Tricep press one arm at a time standing on opposite leg, also pumping other free leg like running
  • bicep curl
  • same as above on one leg doing flys
  • lat pull downs
  • single leg quarter squats holding dumbells
  • same as above but stepping up on your ball of foot for all of the above

There are a lot more that you can do almost anywhere with no equipment. It does not need to be overly complicated. You don't need an app.

"Essential" implies that one cannot be competitively successful without strength training. The facts are years and tens of thousands of triathletes that have successfully prepared and competed in triathlon without a single day of strength training. Multitudes have taken the podium at various levels without strength training. Kind of hard to buy that it is essential when so many have done without it.

Though strength training is and has been my specialty for over 30 years I am not quite sold that it is "essential" for the triathlete. I have no dog in this fight so I will not continue on. I gave the OP a decent source of information to look at for free.

Can you see what is the essential problem with your answer. You say you have limited budget, yet you are willing to blow money on an app. Why don't you just save your money and focus on doing basic exercises that you can get off youtube (see my list). None of this is rocket science. You don't need electronics getting in the way of the analog world. Your physiology won't know if it is getting stressed and stronger from picking up a book, talking to a coach, or using an app.Sorry for the tough love here!
