Anyone still race older steel bikes?
I picked up an older custom steel tt bike. Thinking about hitting a couple tt races next summer, I was wondering if anyone ever broke out their older bikes to race.

Yup! I race cyclocross my 10 speed Nishiki Century... I also used it in an Olympic distance tri one time... Was pretty slow, but felt like a stud every time I passed a carbon bike!

Older bike, it is my only bike and have been racing since 2005.

was it designed for use with aero bars? Some of the real old ones had strange geometry for cowhorn bars which would be pretty useless

should be fine, aero bars were late 80's, I'd assume the bike has a steep seat angle and allows you to get a decent position.

I made the head angle on my hot tubes a little steeper

looks like the seat is way back behind the bottom bracket, maybe compare that measure with a modern tt bike.

eyeball this picture and drop a plumb line from saddle nose down, then compare to yours--huge difference, like inches

The geometry is nothing like my other bike, I still might try it out in a race or two,

that must have been designed for racing on cowhorm bars, this kind of deal. I'd race that bike in a heartbeat though. I'd put a no setback post on it though I guess

When I was originally looking for a "funny bike" thats what I was going for. This bike was offered to me at a very low price, with clincher training wheels. Once I figure out what I like, I might switch it to down tube shifters and bull horn bars.

In the first Cat 3 race of my career this spring I raced my 1996 vintage Bianchi Campione d'Italia (lugged steel with steel fork). Of course I put my Zipp wheels on it;)
My usual race bike is a custom 2007 Serotta Couer d'Acier, but it is kind of glitzy for steel with a carbon seat stays, carbon crank and carbon fork. Makes a pretty nice
17 pound steel bike (size 61 cm.).

My CX race bike is also steel.

Best bang for the buck, podiums and wins on all three of my steel race bikes.

This is why I struggle on buying a new bike. The bike is not the real issue, it is my engine. But the new stuff is so cool.
Now, I wonder what it would look like if I put Di2 on my steel bike. :o)

Okay, so looking at it more closely.

1. Lose the Tufos
2. WTF is up with the brake levers? Get some $20 dia compe cowhorn levers even, gotta be more aero than the ones you have on there.

Think I might swap out the whole cockpit. Might get rid of the heds also.

I would keep the bars ... the integrated visiontech are a very, very slippery choice. Maybe a pair of the tiny visiontech aero levers, and you're good.

The HEDs are not the fastest wheels, but they look good on that bike. TUFOs are just really slow tires. It is a balance between looking good and going fast;)

Be aware that you can't race ITU rules on a bike with 2 different tire sizes.

I have a KHS Aero Turbo that I sometimes race just for kicks. It was built with a 74 or 75 degree seat angle and with a zero off-set post it gets me pretty close to my normal TT position. I don't think it is really that much slower.
