Another sufferer of leg cramps here, usually towards the end of the bike during a 70.3 and on the run.
I've pretty much accepted that it is due to fitness....I've never had any luck with nutrition changes, salt pills, etc in terms of preventing the cramps.
I also tend to agree with the idea that if the cramping were in fact due to nutrition/electrolytes, that I'd be cramping all over, not just legs.
My question is....
When my legs cramp, it is always the same muscles in both legs at the exact same time. For me it is usually the inside of the quads (around the sartorius/gracilis area). The thing I find odd is that, again, both legs, exact same muscles, same time. If the cramps are due to lack of fitness, how are they managing to cramp at the exact same time both legs? Geez, I don't think my pedal stroke is -that- even per side... :) Just find it odd...
