Have not heard much about him as of late? Is he injured? Racing? Going to make it to Kona?

Highly unlikely since hasn't raced one single race since Kona 14. It's probably impossible to get the points right now.

He dropped out of Kona because of a sacrum stress fracture. He hasn't said anything since regarding his recovery. Most likely he's still not 100% otherwise he'd be out there racing by now.

I recently read that his current swim mileage is more than his current run mileage.

Sacral stress fracture is a major injury. It could be career ending. But if anyone can bounce back from it, it's someone as stubborn as Starky. But until he's 100%, he's basically laying low and working to get back.

I hope he's got a good support system and help in getting back! I know injury can play mind games (I'm sure you're aware Jordan) so having people there to push you through the dark days is crucial.

I hope Starky is back stronger than ever and in full health sooner rather than later.

Throwing this out there, but could he try to make a splash set a new Iron Distance bike record? Could be a good course to try especially since Kona is a no go.

You mean 'win' the aquabike when everyone else is doing a triathlon to have something to brag about? I can only find that very lame...

The solution here is simple. The Iron Cowboy has shown us the way. Do the swim and the bike as normal then "run" the marathon on an eliptical set up in T2.

I like it too.

No one complains about the breakaways that always get caught at the TDF, but this forum has a major problem with Swim/Bike combos that fail in the run. Why?

Cause they "fail" in the run.

That's a bit disrespectful IMO to say about someone with multiple IM wins under their belt. Fine if there was never an end product but in many instances the "blow ups" still result in top 10 finishes. It's not like he's just jogging in in 4hrs+.

He is on the start list for Racine 70.3 the week after.

TdF breakaways don't always get caught. In fact Oscar Pereiro "won" and Floyd Landis "won" then lost the 2006 TdF off of breakaways. Furthermore, TdF breakaways often serve other purposes, namely producing TV time for sponsors. Until proven otherwise going huge on the bike in Kona is a strategy for losing. (Mark Allen had a nice piece about this in Lava a few months ago.)

You seemed to have just listed multiple reasons why his strategy is not worthy of such negative talk.

Swim bike combos don't always fail. See 7:55 PR.

Strong swim bike combos serve other purposes - like TV time and splits for sponsors. (E.G. would anyone be reading anything from Giardini if he ran a more evenly paced race but placed the same? Looks like he's built some talk from it and I commend the guy, tough way to get the result)

Sure it's a hard nosed strategy, but look at Steve Prefontaine. He built his name on making the race as hard as possible, which isn't always as fast as possible, and that's ok.

You guys are talking past each other. There is a big difference between drilling the bike and trying to hang on for the win verses drilling the bike for a new bike course record because you know you can't run and are injured. The first is normal and a lot of the people who are better on the bike do it. The second is lame.

Serious question, what does that mean about Prefontaine? I only know that he was an awesome runner. Is the '97 movie about him worth watching?
