Sad.... must have been the wrong place at the wrong time. Very big blind spots with trucks and I am guessing Amy was in one. When I drive the firetruck or when i used to drive a 36' box truck you always have to be aware as a driver. Especially after passing someone running or biking.

Hope she comes through with limited issues. This is why I never ride/wait next to a car or truck. I always ride behind or in front so that I can watch for brake lights/blinkers and hopefully see the vehicle turning into my way.

My thoughts are with Amy. This news absolutely sucks.




Edited my post- posts keep getting deleted about the accident and I don't want to get anyone in trouble.... but I don't think that is what happened in this accident. I agree- be careful around trucks, but from the limited information available right now, it appears that this is not what happened in this incident.

My GF works for the the hospital she has been taken to, I haven't heard any more updates yet, it may be a day or a few more. I was just talking to Amy on Thursday too :(

My mom lives in Ortonville. Whenever I visit her, I think that it'd be both a great and a terrible place to train since the roads seem pretty open but there are zero shoulders and the cars go flying by at 55+ mph, which makes me worry about how considerate they are to cyclists or if they're even aware of them. This could have been any one of us - something that I'm more aware of now days having had a bike crash earlier this year which left me in hospital. I was VERY lucky. But Amy not so much. That's the dice we roll every time we go out.

I rode with her in Kona last year when she got the new Gluxcapacitator. She was soo happy to have that bike and be off the old one. Looked so good riding it too.

Don't know Amy, but sending all my positive thoughts her way. Tough times ahead, but all signs point to her being tougher. Hoping for a terrific outcome.

I heard about this yesterday and was completely shocked. Not only about Amy being hit, but also where she was hit was not too far from my normal routes. She is definitely in my thoughts and prayers for a complete and speedy recovery. Alex, please keep the updates coming.

Are there details anywhere about how the accident happened?

I read an account that the driver wasn't wearing his prescription glasses.... but don't quote me on that.

I read that as well, but whomever wrote that also wrote that they weren't sure if he was wearing contacts or not. My license says I need glasses, but I am always wearing my contacts, hence I'm technically not 'wearing my glasses.'

Being an eye doctor, it would be very easy to see if and when the driver of the semi ever wore contact lenses. I'm sure the personal injury attorneys can do this, but the drivers last 2 or 3 eye exams need to be reviewed. I will guess that the driver never had contact lenses but again, this will be easy to discover.

Her sister posted on her Facebook last night. They are testing on a CPAP now and she is doing very well. Still early stages in the trauma so she is still being watched closely.

Riding the Awesome Train With: Dark Horse Coaching

I've ridden all over northern/western Oakland county and, for the most part, haven't had many problems with cars/drivers other than the occasional whistle or verbal taunting. Most of the roads have no useful shoulder and more than a few are in poor shape. Even on the best roads, you can't take for granted that a gravel hauler, lawn care truck/trailer, soccer mom in an Explorer, or a kid on a motorcycle is going to see you in time & take caution when passing.

This applies to the Metroparks too - this spring my wife was passed very closely by a car of yelling teenagers at Stoney creek . You never know.

To me, riding the public roads comes with a certain amount of risk, and I'm ok with that. There are many roads I avoid and certain times during the day where I don't like to ride, because to me it's too dangerous. I would much rather be out in the countryside somewhere, whether it's Metomora, Capac, Armada, Davisburg, Fenton, or Brighton, than riding endless loops around Stoney Creek.

Northern Oakland county is a great place to ride. Genesee county, though - not a chance.

I haven't posted in years but wanted to add my positive thoughts to Amy, her family, and her friends. I have lived through what she is going through right now. On May 30th 2009 I was hit by a van going 55 MPH almost exactly where Amy was hit. I went through the same treatments she has gone through so far. Induced coma, surgeries to repair broken bones, ear reatachment..... and on and on and on. I know what she is going through. I know what her family and friends are going through as well. This will not be easy but, I hope that she will come through it. It has been 3.5 years and I am finally through it. To any of her family and friends, it is possible to recover from this completely. It takes a lot of hard work and drive but from what I read, those are not things that are lacking in Amy. My deepest thoughts to all involved. Life is tough.... we are tougher.

Hope Amy's family doesn't mind but for those of you that don't know her, here is a video put together of what an amazing athlete and great person she is. She has an amzaing circle of friends all behind her and supporting her until she is better.
She WILL pull though this.

this is extremely disturbing for me to read this news. Not only just because it's just a really horrible thing to happen to someone, but I also suffered a very scary bike accident this past weekend. She is at Henry Ford Hospital room 455A. She may have been moved however.

Here was the message I recieved:

Details: It was about 3 pm, Sat., Sept. 15, 2012. Amy was biking with Dave Pasco in Metamora (near Lapeer, MI). Amy decided to do an out and back portion without Dave while he waited for her at the car. She was heading eastbound and a gravel hauler (a long train-like gravel hauler) was heading westbound. Amy was wearing her orange Team Mongo jersey. So, the color was such that it would not blend with anything, but it was not neon either. The truck-driver turned left in front of her and hit her. He told the police that he did not see her. There was no evidence that the driver was texting & driving, talking on the cell phone & driving, drunk or high. His driver’s license did say he wore glasses & he was not, however I do not know if he was wearing contact lenses. Amy’s Garmin did not give any information that would help with determining what actually happened. There was a car that was behind the gravel hauler whose driver called 911. So, there was a witness. Dave Pasco identified Amy at the hospital. They called Amy’s mom as she was the I.C.E. (in case of emergency) on Amy’s cell.

My cousin happens to be the top neurosurgeon working with Amy. Dr. Steven Kalkanis is taking great care of her and says she is very strong and they are doing the very best they can with her. She is in a very difficult position but if anyone can help her it's Dr K. Top of class at Harvard undergrad and top of class neurosurgeons at Harvard. Amy has the best of care you can get. Plus she is stubborn and really pissed off about not racing Kona this October so watch out!! An upset Gluck is nothing anyone would like to deal with - trust me! And she's pissed off! :)

My Mom grew up not far from there. It's tough riding in some of the more rural parts of Michigan. There are a lot of bad places to ride in Michigan due to the drivers and disrepair of the roads in general.

I have good news to report. Amy has been opening her eyes and is moving her arms and legs. She even mouthed hello. Sort of hard to do with a vent in your mouth when you haven't talked for 2 weeks.

Just got one today. She is still in critical condition but improving and unfortunatly contracted pneumonia. This put her back a little on her breathing but overall not a major setback. Keep those positive thoughts coming!

She is doing much better than anyone would have guessed just 2 weeks after her accident, she does have pneumonia right now but resting comfortably. Amy has this fight in her to get through this and come back.to racing someday. She .is Amy Gluck Iron Amy.

When I talked to her 2 weeks ago she still has quite a way to go.

She rememered me and looked through the pictures I had with me. She recognized the places in the pictures.

I haven't seen her walk so I can't comment on that but I've heard the rehab is going well. Still I think it will be several months before she leaves rehab.

In the fall of 2008, 7 good friends signed up for Ironman Louisville-only 6 would finish.

The smack-talk started seconds after the signup, but a terrible accident in May of 2009 forced everyone to question what they were doing, why they were doing it, and at times, should they do it.

The Road to Ironman is the powerful tale of that journey.
