Just over 3km, with an equivalent time to approx 1.9km.

That was spectacular mate, guessing a drone was used for a lot of the overhead footage.

So this is what I'm thinking (looking for feedback from the community)

The swim is 3km give or take, but times are equivalent to 1.9km. We have some pretty amazing mountain bike tracks at the swim exit, there are already courses used for the Huka Challenge as part of Round the Lake (http://cyclechallenge.com/...categories/off-road/). And the run out to Aratiatia Dam, off-road, and back would be close to 21km.

I have scoped a 90km road ride too from the swim exit.

Does anybody know of a half ironman which has both on and off-road options, and could the two competitors compete against each other i.e could I put up prize money for first back, work out an equivalent on road / off road distance? My thought is to get a local young elite to TT the on road course, then a week or two later send him on my off-road course for that amount of time, he covers say 40km off road on the time it took him to cover 90km on road, then I set the course at that.

Does my idea have wheels.....because I'm serious about delivering this next year around March / April.

:)

Yes a drone was used. It's a spectacular swim, basically the river mouth behind you at the start of IMNZ is it, the start of this swim is around 1km from the start of Ironman start by the Yacht Club.

Looks pretty amazing. Might have to cross the river to NZ & give that one a go in the next year or two.

That river is beautiful! Mightily cold I'm guessing, even in February.

What are the trails or backroads like round there? If you make it doable for someone with a CX rig, and then put the run on a trail like the one at the Rotorua Half, I think it would be incredible.

There are already 70.3 Auckland, IM Taupo, POT Tauranga, and Rotorua 1/2 over the summer (as well as Wanaka and IronMaori), so I think people who want a road race are well catered for.

This is Craters of the Moon, which would be the off-road bike:

And this is the Rotary Ride where the run could potentially go (with the gorgeous Sarah Ulmer.....):
