70.3 Gulf Coast - swim cancelled (again!)
I was here in Full Ironman 2014 and swim was cancelled.
Came here again for the 70.3, because weather supposed to be good.
Swim cancelled due to waves 3-4ft height.

funny i was there in '14 also, was also in Maryland last year when that swim was cancelled.

I will no longer due any races that are affected by waves,.

That being said, I saw the video. No way the waves are 3-4 ft.

I live at the beach and surf year round. Same as in 14' That maybe 1-2 feet, but safety first

Bummer. Am planning IMFL as my first full next year and was planning to pair Gulf Coast to get familiar with course. Sorry if this is one of those questions where I can just look up / google but typically what's the chance of swim cancellation at IMFL? 25%? More? less? Hope all racing today make the best of it, you have to respect safety first.

I agree with ^^^.

'Usually' has to be really rough to get the full's swim cancelled. ...meaning, it's rough enough that you wouldn't even want to get out there. IMFL can have a smooth glass gulf or it can have some respectable swells. Swells more so than chop. Would be a good idea to not show up trying that for the first time at your race.

I don't believe the IMFlorida swim has ever been cancelled, but I could be wrong.

I'm as annoyed as anyone that the swim was cancelled, but 3-4 foot waves were not the cause. The fact that the water is and was coming in essentially horizontal to shore causing rip currents is why. To say it wouldn't have been very tough on weaker swimmers would be wrong. I went out there after the race and the conditions aren't good.

cool, so low probability of swim cancellation :-) thanks for the feedback everyone. just a couple of bad luck years over a long time, hopefully next year isn't one of those. bummer for this years 70.3 but sure it was the right call.

I raced today also, and yes due to red flag rip tide warning.

2014 had swim cancelled not so much because of wave height but more to wind and current. 2013 had bigger waves and swim still went off because safety boats were able to position and stay in place. Wife saw LOTS of swimmers brought in.

Rough swim at full last year. Lots of people vomiting on run to start second lap of swim. Windy ride too.

I did the race in 2013 and it wasn't as bad as people and the photos made it out to be. It was my first full as well. I think a lot of the problem is people scheduling races with ocean swims having little to no experience with ocean swimming.

I've seen results from much smaller races where they do a short run in place of the swim. Obviously with 2,000+ athletes that would be a nightmare. So, I assume they sent you off like a time trial? One rider every fifteen seconds or something?

TT start every 4 seconds. Expected a massive draft fest and that really didn't appear to be the case, although there were some large packs of slower athletes together which is always the case at larger events. Actually was a very well run race.

Thanks. I guess every 15 seconds would take all day. How did they select start order? Race number?

Yes, ascending by race #. That was the only negative - expected to be into the post race beer before 10:30, but that was pushed an hour.

Yes race number. I finally found a benefit to being an AWA. #139. Drafting wasn't too bad at all, but I saw more officials on motorcycles at this race then the other 6 IM brand races I've done combined. Saw 3 guys in penalty tent on way back in.
