25 mm Tire Pressure

ST -

I am shifting from 23 to 25mm tires. Welcome your input on what tire pressure you use on your 25 mm tires. I ride Conti GP 4000sII on my race wheels and Conti GP 4 Season on my trainer wheels. For 23 mm I rode 110psi/120psi (front/back). For 25 mm I dropped 10 psi to 100psi/110psi. Can I drop another 5psi without risking any flats?

Thanks.

Im 200lbs, rode Raleigh 70.3 today with 25mm and latex tubes at 120psi. No flats or issues.

How much do you weigh? What are road conditions? What inner rim diameter? What tubes?

On this chart, I should be riding on 100 psi on 23's and 87 psi on 25's. I ride more like 85-90 psi on 23 for training and 70-75 psi for 25's. That's for training. for racing, I go around 95 psi on 23's depending on pavement. At Wildflower and St. Croix I go around 85-88 psi on 23's. Pavement is just too rough.

As another poster mentioned depends on the rim (specifically the inner rim width) you are mounting those on.

I would *strongly* advise you to inflate them to 100psi and then measure *actual* width versus printed on tire..... 25mm GP400Sii 's as many a previous poster has discovered to their dismay measures more like 29-30mm on today's 'wider' rims when inflated to 100psi.

FYI mine (25mm GP4Ksii) mounted measure 29.5mm and I run them at 75psi (weight 180lbs ish)

I found the Conti4000SII on my Bonetrager Aeolus 70's was waaaay up in the balloon tire range. The 23's run more like 25's on those rims.

So if this chart is correct and I am reading it right, if I am 155 lbs I should be at about 95psi? I am on continental gp4 25's

I weigh about 160lbs. My training wheels are HED Belgium C2s (on a 2015 Specialized SHIV Pro). Road surfaces in N. VA are pretty good, but not perfect. From the posts it looks like I could drop 5 PSI (95/105).

At 160 with 25's I would probably drop more than 5 PSI.

I run 25mm GP4K's on Begium C2 rims at 80-85 and I can probably go lower. I rode that pressure when I was up around 185 and never had a pinch flat. I'm now around 170.

We need your weight and what inner rim width you are riding to make a good estimate, but I'd most likely say that you are already riding too much pressure.

Once again, thanks to everyone for your input. At the risk of exposing my technical ignorance, what is the relationship between inner rim width and correct pressure? Rider weight is pretty straight forward : more weight -> more pressure. However, would appreciate insight on rim width / tire pressure.

So the bead width changes the effective tire width and height. A 25mm GP4000s on a 13mm bead width rim (the old standard) measures at 25.6mm wide and on a 17mm bead width (common new carbon wheels) it measures at 27.1mm wide and on something very wide like an ENVE 7.8 with 19.5mm bead width, that same tire measures, 28mm wide at 100psi! Effectively, the tire is able to act as a larger diameter than listed on the casing as the bead widens.

Where is this chart from? Whom is the source for the data? Look's pretty accurate from my experience.

Seems pretty good if you use the graph for (1) racing conditions on (2) good pavement.

Not racing? Go lower.
Poor pavement? Go lower.

Pretty sure that it is a michelin bike tire graph.
Not sure how they generated the data though ...

It's from Michelin, for their tires.

Nice chart.

I have dropped the pressure since I am running 25c GP 4000II tires to 95 psi up front. Now running a 25c GP on the front wheel and a 23c on the back wheel on the TT bike 105 on the 23c rear wheel.
Apparently this is a trend now in the pro peleton. My reason was not enough clearance on my P3 for a 25c in the back. Running the TT tonight!

Interesting.

Like the chart - which I've not seen before!

I run, 700x25's Conti 4000sII's on all my wheels, I weight 160 lbs, and I run 90-95 psi, which has always felt about right, and sure enough, it lines up with what the chart recommends!

Josh so the pieces you provided for the "Tire Pressure - Stop Guessing" article are interesting. We had this discussion earlier this spring when I was looking for a recommendation for my pro female roommate riding wider rim Enve wheels. I wish we could get a "Ask Josh at Silca" thread going about this so it isn't buried in this thread. Looking at your main graph, not sure if you provided this to Jim Gourley or not but can you give any more specifics to the testing?

It appears, that a 25mm Conti was used, but does not indicate at which speed you were rolling the rubber, the weight of the rider + bike, nor the wheel and it's internal diameter. Recently I had the chance to test out some HED Jet+ which are 21mm wide. This is opposed to my old Zipps that were 16.25mm wide. I did some "quick" tire pressure testing, just finding the number of pumps it took to get my previous tire pressure on the Zipps, then repeating this on the HED Jet+ and stopping at the same number of pumps and recording the PSI difference. I tested many tires, many runs, but in the end it seemed like same number of pumps (#22 pumps fwwiw Joe Blow Sport) results in 9psi lower on the HED Jet+ than the Zipp. My baseline was a Supersonic 23mm that I was pumping to 100psi. Through this testing it also reinforced just how much tires grows thru use as I was seeing a 5% difference in psi between new and old tires.

My question is what is the optimal pressure. Given a 152 lbs + 18 lbs bike for 170lbs total. Using HED Jet+ with 23mm (narrow 23mm) what is the optimal PSI.

Btw, my approach from here on out since I rotate new SS on to the front, and then once used for a few races to the back, is that both PSI, front and rear, will be the same. Fwiw, I rode 94 PSI at Raleigh assuming a few PSI leak for the latex. I pumped at 82 two weeks ago at Chattanooga.

Great Thread and perfect timing for me! I am very nervous converting to 700x25c

I have been using Vittoria Rubino Pro 3 700x23c for years.

Last year put Bontrager Race Lite wheels on my bike
They have Lightweight alloy rim (23mm outer, 17.5mm inner width)

I wanted to be able to take turns more sharper so recently picked up Continental Grand Prix 4000S II 700x25c

I have not put them on yet, been wondering if they would fit on my wheels, putting the right pressure, etc.

From reading above quoting joshatsilca
"17mm bead width (common new carbon wheels) it measures at 27.1mm wide"

My air pressure should be 85-90psi based on the chart with my weight?

Good Morning,

I am very new to triathlons and I have a race tomorrow. What is the best race pressure for Cont attack/force 24mm/22mm tires at on HED Jet 6 Black. I weigh 80kg or 175lb and based on this chart I should run 120psi in the front at 105psi in the rear. Is that correct? Also, should I switch from attack/force to 25mm GP4000s on a Cervelo P5? Looking at a different chart gave my 110 and 95 for front and rear. Very confusing.

Thank you,
Ben
