15 year old mack horton 2nd at aussie trials in 1500 free

15:14.73, just outside the fina cut so he missed selection, but he's only 15.

It is also an Aussie age group record so considering the 1500m guys who held the record before him he looks good for the future...He really tried to drag the field along to make the qualifying time but he faded in the last 400.

It might be the fastest 15 year old time in the world. He should get his feet wet at worlds next year and the contend at Commonwealths in 2014 and the 2016 Rio games.

The guy who beat him is only 17 and now has to wait until the end of June to see if he gets in with his "B" qualifying time...That would be tough to deal with in your head.

Looks like a star of the future. I see him down at the pool I train at when in Melbourne. Beautiful to watch in the water.

Shame no Aussie up there right nw in the 1500m we have such a good history in that event.

I kind of felt a bit sad when we had no Aussies to defend Hacketts record against Sun Yang in the 1500 final in Shanghai last year.. not that it would have made a difference, though it would have been nice..

This article says he went 14:56.6 at the junior worlds last year, vs your original post says he did a 15:14.7 in this more recent meet. Do ya think the 14:56 was scm and the 15:14 lcm???

I had the pleasure of watching him warm up the other day after our masters meet at SCP. Holy crap, now I know what smooth swimming is. Seeing it in person is really something to watch.

Long Chile was a silly place.

Both LCM. The more recent swim was a good "in season" time.

Meh. He's only 4 and a half minutes faster than me.

It might be the fastest 15 year old time in the world.///

A kid i swam in high school with, a bit younger than me, went in the low 15s back in the mid 70's. So slow pools, slow suits, slow everything and he went 15;02 at about 16 i think it was. Of course it was a gold medal in the olympics, as well as winning the 400 too. I'm just guessing here, but a year younger he probably did some pretty incredible times for a 15 year old too, just do not remember what he was doing before the games. I know he was doing some smoking SCY times in our regional champs, like sub 4;20 500 yard free as a freshman or sophomore in high school.

This kid certainly has potential, but he better step up his game soon if he wants to be on the same lap as sun yang and a few others. Guessing Sun probably was doing well under 15 minutes as a 15 year old too. We need someone to give that kayak of a human being a real race in the 1500..

Must be Brian Goodell you're talking about back in '76:)

Montreal 76 pool is still pretty decent by today's standards. How many 10 lane LCM pools are that old?

Mack Horton, Justin Harrison and Jarrod Poort are all very good guys on their way up. Should be pretty strong in the 1500, 5k and 10k in Rio.

WRT Glenn Houseman, always felt for him when he set the world 1500m mark and the timing equipment failed so the time wasn't counted. He had a beautiful style.

I was 14 when the timing misfire happened. We all thought it sucked ass.

Ryan Cochrane's training group is really making strides trying to bridge to that next level. Eric Hedlin was 2nd at worlds in the 5 k sharing a podium with Mellouli and Lurz. He was born in Calgary but grew up in San Diego. Moved to train with the best distance squad in North America instead of drinking the NCAA is always a better route for everyone kool aid.

Something that has always puzzled me about swimming--seems like younger folks are better at endurance racing. Teenagers often post fast times in distance events but more rarely in the sprint events. Older folks can stay competitive in sprints longer than distance. I haven't pulled up any numbers just something I noticed. It's strange to me because running is just the opposite--distance runners peak past 30 while sprinters careers are done. You have any thoughts on this?

Yeah, nice swim by Cochrane. Jordan Harrison just missed the podium by 0.38 or something too. Seems like Horton has aged two years in six months somehow as well....
Now the meet is done they're straight on a plane and back to prepare for Pan Pacs next month. That should be good to watch. Who else will be in the mix in the 1500 there?

These two plus one of the Americans. China and Korea will be focused on the Asian games.
