basketball rule question Quote | Reply

So I recently joined a 3-on-3 basketball league, and today we were playing a game at lunch. One of my team mates passed me the ball, but threw it pretty low. I tried to catch it but the ball slipped through my hands (both hands) and hit the ground. After touching the ground, I grabbed the ball and then started dribbling. I was whistled for double dribble. I pleaded that I had never gained possession of the ball to no avail. Was it the right call? Any refs out there?

We still won the game :)

Doesn't sound like you had possession. But hard to tell without video.

found this that (if true) indicates it's a double dribble in the NBA but not high school/NCAA

i definitely didn't have possession, but that would be for the ref to decide. he said because i touched it with both hands i couldn't dribble.

The real question is did you wash your clothes afterwards?

Where I have played, the rules for pick-up are different than for a formal game. Actually, rules vary by gym; even by which end of the court the game was on.

In your pick-up games, do you call offensive fouls? Three seconds?
Do you have to "take it out" in half court?

I've played where "out of bounds" wan't really called. Well, if the ball went out yes, but if a player stepped a foot of two out of bounds, you let it slide.

We have lockers/showers here (which I love)

I have designated basketball attire that will remain in my locker until the end of the season and will not be washed before ;)

I cleaned my bathroom sink this weekend. I'm expecting some female company ;) ;)

this was actually not a pick up game per se, we have a ref. there was a lot of bitching and moaning about the calls.

Please clean the toilet too. Nothing worse than a dirty boy's toilet.
