I'm looking forward to the results. Silva is an absolutely amazing fighter, but I'd really like to see someone take him down. After watching him mow through Leiben and Franklin, he seemed like he was untouchable. Sonnen absolutely man handled him in their last matchup. I personally think he got over confident and instead of playing conservative in the last round to win, he tried too much and got caught.

I'm not expecting as much this time around. As they say, the loser has the advantage because he knows what he needs to work on. Silva is too good of a fighter not to have prepared a better defense to Sonnen's take downs.

Feel free to post a spoiler when its over.

Sonnen took down Silva in 6 seconds in the first. Stayed on top of Silva the entire round.

Un-fucking-real.

In the second, Sonnen took a REALLY stupid back-hand spin, which missed, and Sonnen fell to the ground. Silva kneed Sonnen on the ground, jumped on him, and started punching. Ref called it at 1:55 in round 2. Silva by TKO.

Re: UFC 148 - Silva v. Sonnen [JSA] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

First UFC PPV I've bought in quite a while....kind of a soft spot in my heart for Tito & that + Cung Le + Silva = win.

Thoughts:

Cung Le at 40, and somewhat fat, was a fun fight to watch. Cote, who could have been a World Champ if he had actually ever trained 10 years ago when the pickins were ripe, was game but had serious rust issues.

Tito: I wanted him to win, so my views are biased, but knock opponent on his ass 2x, take him down 3-4x, but lose? Since when did MMA become about compu-box #s? This was a bit of a stain on the sport---Dana White chasing down FG to convince him to come back to the ring (and Forrest KNEW he lost that fight---hence the usual loss meltdown)---showed me that this was "somewhat" fixed. That being said, Tito (and Forrest) were perfect for MMA 10-12 years ago, but they are hopelessly outclassed now. Its been obvious for 5-6 years that to stop Tito all you had to do was hit him in the face 2-3x and he would stop coming at you. Forrest? I dunno--hardest head in the biz, but he has never beaten a top contender at their prime (sorry, modern contender).

Silva/Sonnen: I had 3-4 friends over & I said this pre-fight: "it could be over in 1 minute or 25---how "good" the fight is will depend on how long it lasts". Seriously, I thought if AS had 30 secs in the middle of the ring he would destroy Sonnen. I've never seen him in this good of shape--the usual softness was gone. Once AS had distance in the middle of the ring he hit CS 5-6x & it was downhill from there. The missed 360 spinning reverse hammer was just the coup de grace. I watched the 2nd round 3-4x and I'm telling you CS was wobbly before missing & falling down. Two of AS punches were so fast i could barely see them on slow motion review. Maybe now Sonnen will quit running his mouth for once.

I'd love to see GSP vs Silva at an in-between weight. I don't disagree that AS is the best fighter ever in MMA......but GSP is pretty damned close. Except for two small miscues, both brutally avenged, his record would be close to that of AS.

If GSP won't fight AS, and I were AS, I would simply fight for the title in the weight classes below + light heavyweight above. I have zero doubt that he could hold 3-4 titles at the same time. Zuffa would never allow it though.

I could be totally off here, but, it looked to me like Sonnen hit his head on the octagon when he missed the spinning punch. It looked like he tagged it right on the temple and was stunned. I watched it 3-4 times to get a better look. He looked dazed and barely covered up when Silva brought down the knee. I did not think the knee was a bad as the announcers were saying. Actually I was quite shocked when Sonnen seemed to just go limp and Silva started pounding him.

I enjoyed the Tito v Forrest fight. I hear what you are saying, but, you cannot land that many significant hits and not win on points. I had it 2 rounds to 1 for Forrest. Tito did not fight a smart fight.

Stopped it too soon.

Should have given Sonnen a chance to get Silva's legs or get knocked out. He was defending himself decently and was totally fine when he got up.

Killed me to miss this fight. Silva is by far my favorite fighter. He was toying too much with his opponents for a little while but his last few fights have been clinics on MMA. I have only been able to find highlights online so far. I was wondering why Sonnen would botch that back fist so badly. He likely would have missed anyway, with the way Silva was so slick with the bob/ weave/ slide.

As far as the knee to the chest being so devastating, he likely lost a bit of wind hitting the mat, then was doubled over, so he never got full capacity back. A knee to the chest/ solar would be icing on the cake there. Just from what I have seen, the fight was over the minute he took that back fist, even if he didn't completely bust his ass. Silva was in perfect position for unleashing destruction.

Watch the replay. Sonnen was done. He was turtled up and doing nothing to defend himself toward the end of the barrage. He was not totally fine. He was a bit dazed and on the ground for a bit before getting up. He wasn't getting out of that and he knew it. Trust me... Sonnen would be the most vocal about things if it was an early stoppage. He got his ass beat and he knew it.

He didn't hit his head. This angle is better than the telecast angle in that regard:

The knee was brutal:

...and done:

I agree with you. I thought Forrest easily won 2 rounds to 1.

I think you are giving Silva far too little credit. I don't know how he does it, but that guy just seems to know what his opponent is about to do. Watching the replay, it was almost like him and Sonnen scripted it the way he timed his duck. Unreal. I am actually not a huge fan of Silva but have to respect what he can do.

Overall, not a great card. Glad I only paid a ten dollar cover.

Silva is kind of an arrogant ass hole (not that Sonen is much better), but an absolutely amazing fighter.

I watched it again on YouTube. The ref made the right call. On first viewing it looked like he could have made a move to the legs, but I think that knee to the chest took too much out of him.

The spinning backfist attempt was really stupid. Especially against AS. What was he thinking? First round he takes it to the ground and it was working well. Second round he should kept trying to get it on the ground. Instead he goes flashy and SLIPS to the ground. Game over. Really dumb.

Watching those angles makes it more clear. Looks like he did not hit his head, but, I still cannot figure out why he looks so dazed on the ground. He just sits there and waits for Silva to drop the knee on him.

As I was watching live, when Sonnen went to the ground, I really expected him to "spin" away from Silva and get back to his feet. I was stunned to see him sit there and take the knee. Yeah, I know, he covered his head. It isn't like he just sat there and did nothing. But, it was just odd looking.

He knew if he started to stand up, he was toast. Between that and trying to get his breath back, his best bet was to sit right there.
