Throw this in the not well thought out category

The federal government now requires every lodging facility that has a pool to have a chair lift.
http://travel.usatoday.com/...on-persists/648998/1
I will skip right over the aesthetics and cost factor to the risk management area.
-little kids monkeying around with the lift
-will this also require a lifeguard or personal assistant on call to deal with a wheelchair bound customer that want to go for a swim?
In the USA we lead the world in attempting to equalize things for everyone to the point of absurdity.

Wow. Seems to me a better idea would have been to offer some kind of incentive to
encourage
equal access to pools instead of a mandate. Someone must have been receiving a kickback for this.

I have mixed feelings on this one. I get the burden on hotel owners/managers. But I also live in a military neigborhood, and, on a daily basis, see a shocking number of the thousands of disabled vets our two recent wars have created. I see how much trouble they can have getting around. And these are *Marines*, for the most part, who are going to be the best there are at adapting. Young, strong, and motivated.

Maybe a compromise would be to mandate any public pool that uses public funds to be ADA accessible. But to mandate that every private motel pool to be set up this way just seems ridiculous.

I thought about that too. I think an incentive would make sense because some hotels, such as in your area, might take advantage of it to serve their community since they get a benefit. I imagine small hotels would have a difficult time installing because of the mandate but with an incentive they could install one.
Edited to add: I read this war has created a large amount of soldiers with severe injuries who survived because of improved care in the field. Even 10 years ago many of these soldiers would have died.

My compromise would be to mandate to the American Hotel & Lodging Association (or something) that X hotels in every city, have a lift, and let them figure it out. They way if a hotel wanted to go after the disabled market, it's on them. And super high-end hotels wouldn't be forced to ruin the look of their high-end infinity-edge pools.
*Every* pool seems overkill.

That is a great and extremely reasonable idea.
From a legal standpoint, I completely understand this and, yes, by the letter of the law, every single pool needs to be equal access. But, from a practical standpoint, that is insane. I travel a lot and try to look for hotels with pools that let me at least pretend to do laps. The article says pools are a huge draw. Maybe, but, I almost never run into another person in the pool. Again, I travel a lot and I just do not see many people in the pool.
The next step is going to be health clubs and that is really going to be a mess. I belong to two clubs. One has an indoor lap pool and an outdoor lap pool with kiddie area. Neither has a lift. In my other club, there is a huge area. I has a 4-lane lap pool (very cold), a large hot tub, and a very large "therapy pool" that is kept very warm and has jets in the corners. It is used for rehab and exercise. That one has a lift, that gets used a lot. So, for that club, would they have to install two more lifts - one for the hot tub and one for the lap pool? In theory, yes. That is nuts.

I think that although the intent is to increase access, the reality is that hotels will just stop building pools (or possibly close existing ones).
which will just reduce accessibility for everyone.
but at least it will be equal

That is exactly what will happen. Beyond initial cost no one will want the liability or to spend the extra money kn training and always having someone on staff available to operate the chair.

Yup. That's going to be the end of pools. Smaller hotels will just fill them in, which will drive customers to the bigger hotels which can afford this expense and the smaller hotels will go out of business... THANKS OBAMA! (Kidding... This Canadian guy has no dog in that fight)
From what I could find on the net, <3% of the US population are wheelchair bound. Of that 3%, how many are traveling and staying in motels or other private pools? It doesn't make any sense unless someone has a big stake in the pool lift industry.
No offense to the disabled / handy-capable, but from what I could find, 5% of the US is French. That's a higher percentage than wheelchair bound. Why isn't the government mandating bilingual signage? I can't imagine what they'll start mandating when they find out ~25% of the US population is gay...

Do any of them even want to use the pool?? I you are para or quad, I think you generally have a healthy fear of the water. If you don't travel with a personal assistant that is trained in handling you in the pool, how can you even use the pool anyway? How much does that narrow the potential users?

In the USA we lead the world in attempting to equalize things for everyone to the point of absurdity.
I was on a bus once and the lift was requested--the driver came back, dutifully strapped the young man in the contraption, hit the button, and nothing...the thing didn't work, so he kicked the dude back to the curb.

Check this out.
Severe quad, and he doesn't look like he needs handling in the pool. But I imagine he'd need help getting out.
Not saying we should require every business in the U.S. to accommodate the tiny fraction of people like him, but it's still pretty cool.

It's amazing how here in the LR as long as the government legislates *something* it's always "leave me alone, get out of my life, this will impact businesses, these should be incentives, not laws, government out of my life"
What has happened to having the government look out for people who are disadvantaged (since for sure a capitalistic system would never do, for obvious reasons, after all as somebody posted earlier "only" <3% of people are wheelchair bound)?
What if your kid was on a wheelchair and you had to explain to them that no, they couldn't go on vacation in the same hotel as their friend but they have to go to the hotel across town because that's the only one that is wheelchair accessible due to "business considerations"?
If you ever had to live with a disability, or had a close family member who had, you'd know just how hard life already is on a regular basis, and you'd realize just how many things you take for granted, and something as minor as a law mandating equal accessibility at pools would be something that'd make you be "oh yeah, that makes sense, strange it wasn't a law already" and not "government outta my life, why should we care about the few, business business business business money money money money".

The entire facility being not wheel chair accessible is quite a bit different than just the pool....and what kind of douche bag invites a family with a wheel chair bound kid on vacation with them and then makes reservations at a hotel that isn't accessible? .... and if that situation did somehow manage to arise, I would carry my kid up the f'in stairs.

As a former summer camp lifeguard, I remember our disabled campers improvising and swimming (or playing in the water) pretty well without the need for a lift chair. This was at a lake, so the requirement was not there. A few years later, a pool was built. The disabled kids did not like using the lift that the camp was required to install, because it made them different from the other kids and they already knew how to get in and out without a lift. I'm sure today things are different and it's good lifts are making pools more accessable. The result of this forced legislation will be the picture in my previous post, which will result in less kids swimming, both disabled and able bodied.
