That's the rumor I'm hearing from my PSU insiders...

Why don't they start by tearing down that Joe Ped statue first.

would be a shame for the current players to be "punished" (using the term loosely) for the sins of the leaders. And then schools who are hosting PSU will lose a truckload of money from a cancelled game. but if the coverup was that bad, then something needs to be done to those directly involved and the institution that they lead (the football program, not the entire university).
with this and other big-time college sports issues (e.g., UNC), i'm pretty much turned off on college football. I'll continue to watch it for entertainment, but I'm done with putting any vested interest into it, even for my alma maters.
i would bet the season isn't cancelled. heck, they played Nebraska the weekend after all of this hit the fan.

They should just scrap the season and donate all the money for the football team to the victims. That would make it clear that the victims are more important than the football team.

Wouldn't it make more sense to actually play the season, get all that revenue, and donate THAT to the victims?

I know I'm a little biased here, but are you really comparing sexual abuse to what is essentially grade fixing and some parking tickets being swept under the rug?

I don't believe so. This would make the football progam important. That's the issue, the football program was too important.

If they don't play the season, where are they going to get the money to donate? Doesn't it make more sense to play each week and remind everyone the they are playing for the victims and the money is going to a fund for the victims? Doesn't that keep this under a spotlight, which is a good thing?

I had a long discussion this afternoon with a friend who is an editor at Grantland. We both agree, that this, no matter what the NCAA may or may not do, is the death-knell for football at Penn St. for at least a generation, if not more.
Look at SMU back in the 80s---they have never recovered, and this is 10x worse.

But SMU got the death penalty. I dunno if Penn State will get that. If the NCAA does nothing, I think this will not affect PSU football.

Nobody should believe that if they support the football program they are helping the victims. That makes the football program too important.

NCAA death penalty vs "yes, I realize we had 20+ years of active cover-up of child molestation at the highest level in our football program/administration, but that was all in the past".
Good luck with recruits.

I would like to agree with you, but, I just don't think that will happen. If PSU doesn't get smacked down by the NCAA, I think they skate. Seriously, in a couple years, it will all be forgotten. People will excuse it b/c all those responsible (JoePa, Pres., etc.) are all gone.

I disagree. There are many things people are forgiving of. Child molestation is not one of them. The football program is joined at the hip with these scumbags and it won't be soon forgotten.

Again, I wish I could agree, but, I am telling you, you are wrong. I traveled all day today, so, I caught a lot of ESPN and radio talking about the Freeh Report. Already, a ton of people are saying the NCAA should not be involved b/c (a) this isn't about football infractions and (b) all the bad actors are gone.

Yes, because State College PA is such a great place to spend 4 years without a top-flight athletic (football) program.
You don't think the coaches/recruiters in Bloomington, Urbana, whereever-the-fuck-the college is in Iowa, Madison et all aren't going to play that angle?
This isn't the 1980s where tradition mattered. If it did, Notre Dame would still be a factor every year (despite NBC's efforts).
4 years in a snowy hell-hole with fat girls or 4 years at The U/FS/AU/ASU/UT/etc with girls 1 step removed from a Girls Gone Wild video......ez choice......and that is before the entire child molestation antics.

I am not going to disagree with location, etc., but, I really don't think this is going affect recruiting (unless the NCAA comes down on them).

I agree with you. Without significant NCAA sanctions, the program will continue on. That is, if the new coach is good enough. But we have already seen how blind the dedicated fans are to all of this. Kind of like JRenfro and Lance....

Might be a shame, might not. The fact is that every person ever associated with Penn State, and those who associate for years to come, are now smeared with the shame of homosexual pedophilia. It's going to follow them around like a rotting diaper...for decades. A reference to Penn State on your resume will instantly lower your chances of getting a job -- except for maybe with the Catholic church.

Hell yeah they will skate! Football fans are not rational human beings when it comes to watching sports. How many people are willing to overlook dog fighting rings, rapists, women beaters, and murderers to continue to root for their prized football program? Pennstate Alum football fanatics are some of the most loyal fans you will ever meet!
If the NCAA does nothing, PSU will do just enough to make people convince themselves that they need not feel any guilt supporting the program. "Sandusky is gone, Paterno is dead, this is a new team, blah blah blah."

There will be a bigger hit to recruiting from the fact that Paterno and the tradition are gone than there will be from the presence of pedophiles. It is very sad but true.
I'm not sure what purpose is served by killing the football program outright. I think there is a scarily large list of people that failed here, and I think that list was so large because of how much control and power football coaches have with the public. If you look at what has happened at USC with Pete Carroll, OSU with Jim Tressel, University of Miami, PSU, ... no one is willing to stand up to or contradict the coach because it will be the end of their careers.
But I don't think there is an easy answer here. I think you start by removing pretty much every coach from the football team to get a fresh start, fire anyone in the administration that had any knowledge of this (since we know not a one of them came forward), and co-operate completely with any legal proceedings. They should also establish a pretty large pool of money to settle with victims so those people don't have to go through the expense and stress of suing.
Oh, and tell the Paterno family to just shut the hell up. Stop trying to justify or minimize his role in this. At first I thought he was getting a raw deal, but the more you see how much he did to try to cover it up the more sickened I am.

I've said it for many years. When you start idolizing and worshiping coaches and players, you get into trouble. Naming buildings and streets for current coaches and erecting statues of current coaches is a dangerous game. You can bet your ass that Joe Paterno knew he was bigger than the school because his fans and his almuni allowed it to happen.
