Lots of golf on TV for the next four days so its time to pick your horses.
I am thinking of kicking off the tournament with an early morning solo sacrifice of a few dimpled balls to the golf gods. Thats right bitches I am off and I have all day to golf and watch golf if I so choose!!!!

There is something about the U.S. Open courses (the private ones), that makes me jealous as hell. I try not to covet what my neighbor has too much, but when it comes to membership at these ultra-exclusive, old-money courses, I can't help myself. I want in bad....Winged Foot, Olympic, Shinnecock Hills, Baltusrol, Merion, etc...I'll take any of them. I guess unless I start a hedge-fund or become CEO of a Fortune 500 I don't have much of a shot in hell, but I can dream.

At least life has options, my friends paid about 50 bucks to play Bethpage Black a few weeks ago, which is in beyond premo shape at the moment as they are preparing it to host the Barclays in August. I played Bethpage over Memorial Day weekend....but it was the Green course as I would probably hit 130 on the Black.

Yes - it is nice to be able to play some of the Open courses. I've played Bethpage Black and Pinehurst No. 2. Walked on but never played Pebble Beach. I suppose there is Torrey Pines as well. Can't think of any others. Still, I want to call a course my own and relax in the rich mahogany of the men's locker room before taking dinner on the veranda overlooking 18 all the while knowing that the 99%s can't sniff there way past the security guard except for once every 12 years when we host the U.S. Open and even then I get to park at the clubhouse.

Any hints as to how I make friends who can afford a $100,000+ initiation fee? That would solve a lot of problems.

Be creative. You may be surprised who you know that might know someone.
Hell many times the $100,000 isnt the hard part. The waiting list is what kills you.
In all, Olympic has about 5,000 voting members. The annual budget is a whopping $40 million, and the waiting list is eight to 10 years.
I could have set you up a few years ago but you would have had to come to the Dark Side.
In all seriousness I had an old roomie whos dad was a member at Newport CC (
http://en.wikipedia.org/...Newport_Country_Club
) while his mothers family had a membership at Myopia (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myopia_Hunt_Club
) and a grandfather was a member at a classic very private Donald Ross course. What he found funny was that he didnt appreciate what he had access to when he was young and didnt take up golf until his mid 20's. I have a standing invitation. His father also has a house at Pebble where my bud spent 6 months doing nothing but golfing the great courses in the area. ( I told him I hated him)
I have had invitations at some of the dream courses but when I had the contacts I just never had the time.
"Oh you played Pine Valley?"
"Ummm NO!"
"Oh. Well anytime you want to play let me know. Im a member "
I had similar conversations with member s of many of the dream courses that we would all love one shot at playing but I am not from the circle of people who can afford such courses. I live a "golf life" that many people would be jealous of and looking back it was a pretty cool time. It pays to be a nice guy. Thats right, you heard it here. Rodred= nice guy.
Heres one to make you feel bad.
The manager of one of the Edwin Watts in Orlando shows up for a couple hours of work when a regular customer walks into the store. Now he knew the guy was well to do and they had gotten to know each other over his time at EW so he wasnt surprised when the guy asked if he wanted to go play a little golf later. He figured he was going to get an invite to Isleworth which was nearby.
He said he had to work a few hours but them would be ready to go. The customer told him to show up at the local small airport which he thought was very odd. Well he arrived and they jumped on the guys jet and flew to Augusta where he just happened to be a member. Total shocker.

Save your money on Pebble. 6 hour rounds. There are maybe 6 memorable holes by the water, but the rest of the course is incredibly forgettable. We had planned to play it 3 days, but bagged it after day 1 and played Spyglass the rest of the time and Spanish Bay once(also very forgettable). Spyglass is insanely pretty from 1-18!
Pebble is insane. The Japs are nuts for it. The had a group of them on the putting green that had flown all night, came in to play a single round, hit the airport and fly home all night. When we cancelled our tee times they had a book thicker than a rhino turd with back ups ready to roll.

The funny thing was you would never have guessed from meeting him or his father. He loved Donald Ross so when I moved back to Ohio and he came to stay with me I took him to a local DR 36 hole muni near my place. He wasnt a golf snob and was just speechless that we walked 18 holes on a DR course for $15. We then got invited to a local private club that is a kickass DR layout and spent the rest of the day with the course to ourselves.
It was kind of cool hanging out at our place and having Brad Faxon call the house and then come over and bring us the new ( original) ProV1 before it ever hit the market or talking about who we had met/ practiced with/ golfed with each day. He went on to caddy on the LPGA tour for a couple of years including the Solheim Cup. We were sitting around watching TV one day and the phone rings. He sat close enough to me that I could hear the person on the other end. It was Natalie Gulbis. She was in town and forgot he lived there and was pissed that they couldnt get together the night before for some fun. This was back in the days when her dad kept her under his thumb but for some reason he didnt come with her on that trip.
You can have the golf. Having a night with Natalie would have been more memorable!
I really hated him after that call.
Sorry about getting off topic but those were some good days to be a golfer.

I MUST disagree. I loved Pebble Beach. That was the best 5 hour round I have ever played. I did tee off at 7:30am so if I had teed off later I don't doubt it would have been 6 hours. But it was gorgeous and would love to play again if I get the chance.
I also loved Spyglass Hill, tough SOB of a course. But the toughest I have played out there is Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz an hour up the coast. Back when I was a 6 handicap I could never break 90.

Can't believe Tiger is that big a favorite...I mean, I can, but I can't. He still is playing way too inconsistently to be 6/1.
I'll probably look like an idiot for this post by Sunday afternoon.

I agree with you.
I would put Tiger as the favourite but would also give a few others some odds pretty close to his. I think Lee Westwood and Rory certainly should be up there and possibly Bubba Watson and Luke Donald too. Dustin Johnson is playing well and Phil always seems to be on the leader board on Sunday.
I can't wait for this major after Tiger sent his message a few weeks ago and a few others playing really well.
I'd love to see Rory and Tiger in the final pairing on Sunday.

Odds are made to get people to place bets, not to make accurate predictions on actual potential. So Tiger will always get more favorable odds than he "deserves", because people want to bet on him.

Agree 100%. 6/1 is very generous.

I'm a big Phil fan too but these guys just don't have a big rivalry. You would think that they would have been paired together countless times on a Sunday in a major but it rarely happens.

I understand what you mean by rivalry but they do have one. They are not fond of each other at all unless there has been a change as of late.

I played Augusta National when I was 16. I've also played Pinehurst and TPC at Sawgrass plus quite a few others. We have some awesome golf courses down south. I was raised about 100 yards off the 18th fairway of one and have played since I was 6. My father cut off a set of clubs and regripped them to fit me. I don't get to play a lot these days but I still love the game.
