Oh, one more thing...I had a digital watch, the first in my classroom. It was Texas Instruments, the kind that you press a button and the time (hr and min) light up in red on some kind of grid, not an LCD. yuo press twice and it shows the date and three times and you get the seconds. It was sooooooo cool.............

I had one of these bad boys. The first IBM Thinkpad. Black and white display. I think it had a 512k hard drive. Cutting edge, baby!

I'm going to throw a nautical bent into this thread: navigating before GPS.

I could probably still do LORAN interpolation while half asleep. Also had the experience of being on watch for a landfall on Sable Island (AKA "The Graveyard of the Atlantic"), which was notorious for poor LORAN coverage. Our SATNAV unit wasn't working especially well, either. So I got a taste of the age-old type of nervousness that you get during the mid watch while looking VERY intently for a lighthouse.

It's different now, with always knowing where you are.

What kind of ship were you sailing on?
Here is a shot of the chart room of my first ship. On the left is a radio direction finder (I think you will know what it is and how it works :) ), in the middle is the satelite receiver. Ancient thing, the satelite had to be high enough above the horizon, but not too high for good fix).
LORAN, we didn't have it...
Cheers....

My second computer was a Commodore 64 (and it's still in a box in my parents' attic).

But my FIRST computer was this marvel of electronics:

Black and white display, and a whopping 1k of RAM (expandable to 16k, that add-on block in the pic).

I remember the way it felt to turn the switch on our B&W t.v., and wait. And wait for the tubes to heat up.
I remember my grandpa's "remote", that would flip erratically through channels until it landed on the one you wanted.
AND, I remember watching Neal Armostrong walk on the moon on that same tv.
I remeber banging Maggie Cody on a golfcourse w/bullfrogs cheering me on.
I remeber listening to my old man and his friends getting loaded, on booze, and laughing their asses off.
I remember the way exhaust used to smell.
I remember when neighborhoods were full of kids playing capture the flag, and "bombs over russia."
I remember listening to Jack Buck call the Cardinals' game, on KMOX in St. Louis, from an a.m. clock radio in Denver, Colorado.
I remember not being afraid my country would cease to exist for my children.

It's simple, but it isn't easy.

I remember the county fair had Penny Arcades where the was something you could play with a penny, though most games were nickle or dime. And there were no video games.

Also at the county fair you could go to the shooting gallery and pluck down a dollar to shot ten 22 gallery rounds at moving ducks, stars etc. I think if you were old enough to hold the gun you could shoot. Lots of fun.

gasoline at 19cents per gallon. My mom thought this was horribly expensive.

soda only came in glass bottles, no cans and no plastic.

popcorn was heated in a pan on your stove with oil and kernels. (still do this sometimes)

Had a Radar Range...my grandmother would not stay in the house if it was on
RCA 3 clicker remote....my grandmother was afraid it was going to burn holes in the walls
Had the first solar calculator in class, I hated it
My mom had to have the very first year of not only the Fiero, but the Ford Probe.....need I say more?

Sailing research vessel/school ship, Corwith Cramer. 98 feet on deck, brigantine-rigged. That was at the beginning of my seagoing career, which included traditional sail, supply boats in the oil patch, and tugboats on the east coast.

Never got a chance to play with a functioning RDF. Shame, really. I loved how the old methods, even if they used electronics, still required working out geometry problems on the chart.

BTW, I can actually do horizontal sextant angles, which I don't think is even included in Bowditch anymore.

No Fiero, but my mom bought Ford Probe #12. That's right the 12th Probe to come off the line (1989, I think). Metallic gold. Digital dash readout with heads up mph display. She barely ever drove it and (long story) it ended up sitting in a garage for years. My brother has it now and it has 40,000 miles on it. Blue Book value is about $5.

My family got it's first microwave (the kind with the dial you had to spin to set the time)

And our first VCR. I think it was pretty close to $1000

I never tried horizontal sextant angles, used compass instead. But got pretty good measuring stars. It was fun to do the clasic navigation. My teacher even showed us how to determine your position by measuring angles between two celestial objects. Long and complicated, did it few times.
Cheers...

I remember taking a test on reading punch cards and learning BASIC programming and installing my first MS DOS program and creating a log in screen

I remember learning to use a slide ruler even though the TI and HP business and scientific calculators would soon eliminate all production of these.

I also remember making summer treats in an ice cube tray and frying bologne over the gas stove at home
