I guess it would help to identify your religious affiliation first so as to understand which God you are talking about.

Anyhow, why would a God create something put it on a hunk of dirt, among many hunks?

I have no affiliation. The longer I live the more I look at "God" as a process, similar to nature. Life occurs when the "correct" set of circumstances happen. If there is a real intelligence behind this I obviously don't know. I will say that the result of this process is wonderful.

God created us so that we would waste our time posting in the Lavender room, and for him to have some shit to read when he is bored.

Actually, nowadays I'm probably agnostic bordering on atheist on certain days but God (or G-d or Allah or Yaweh or whomever), if he's out there, doesn't play dice and he doesn't act in ways that are comprehensible to us. Maybe in his view, this clump of dirt we exist on is just one of billions of such clumps of dirt on which life has arisen, either from reactions caused by the Higgs Boson or "God Particle" or some other mechanism, all of which he's placed on this plane of existence? I just took a series of online lectures and seminars from some of the more brilliant thinkers on the world's religions out there in the field today (Houston Smith, Philip Novak et al), and what we know about religion is miniscule. It's clear that something's motivating us to either create God or some version of the Godhead, though. Whether it's some sort of artifact or structure we ourselves create or it's put there by divine hand science will never be able to answer definitively. It's the divine we're talking about, after all.

Personally, I subscribe to the "wall" part of the "wall/door" metaphor. I'll let you look that up if you're curious about what I believe about us and our place in the universe. Still, that doesn't mean I don't respect the customs and beliefs of the so-called "religious" out there, instead of sneering knowingly at them in a superior -- and supercilious -- manner, as many here in the LR tend to do.

Not sure why you brought sex into it, but I've seen some hunks out there who probably come as close as anything else I've observed to constituting evidence of a creator god. ;)

I have more faith in you than you have in yourself. You sneer knowingly in a superior and supercilious manner more than anyone else in the LR. It's just that on this topic you are uncertain about your viewpoint. If you keep at it I'm sure you'll come to a more fixed view in time, and then you can engage in more of the championship level supercilious sneering for which you are renowned.

All things considered, though, I'd prefer that you rediscovered your faith and did your sneering for the other side. We value our credibility.

No, I just sneer at folks like you. Mainly because I don't like certain types of foreigners, and smartass foreigners most of all. I count you in both those categories. What I believe or don't believe is up to me to decide. And it's not based on some sort of "faith" you may or may not have or may or may not have.

So really, all these debates about how everything started and all these religious topics, and not a single religious voice can explain why their God made them?

I'll take a shot in the dark - way in the dark . . .

first of all, there is no deity; but the notion of God as an imperishable substrate (or unstable nothingness) from which the perishable emanates . . . the concept of a god or creator may have some utility.

One answer then, should we assume the concept of a God or Creator is useful, the 'reason' why sentient beings are here is so the imperishable substrate may become aware of itself - or put another way, evolution is biased towards consciousness, and our current understanding of evolution as biased towards that which survives is incomplete.

For example, imagine 1000 universes of sufficient lifetime - how many will have evolved life? How many will have evolved sentient beings?

No. Nobody can. It's impossible to explain an absurd assertion.

Can someone explain why your God created us?

The answers are generally speculative and bordering on heretical. Yet, I think the Children's catechism answers this as good as anyone (below). See Question #3.

Q. 1. Who made you?
A. God.

Q. 2. What else did God make?
A. God made all things.

Q. 3. Why did God make you and all things ?
A. For his own glory.

One could answer turn to Paul in Romans 9.

One thing to consider is that God, before creation, had no opportunity (among the Godhead) to demonstrate any mercy. One one reads the OT, perhaps the richest word that keeps coming up is the Hebrew word "hesed." Without creation, there could be no "hesed."

Anyhow, why would a God create something put it on a hunk of dirt, among many hunks?

This is a very loaded question. Yet, even people recorded in the Bible have asked similar questions. Both Job and Habakkuk demanded answers from God. God responded to Job in a way that must be read to appreciate (Job 38 - 40). Perhaps, after you read God's response to Job, then you wouldn't ask it in this way.

Re: Can someone explain why your God created us? [DavHamm] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

My take as a Christian is this: To understand why God made us we must understand ourselves as individuals and as a species.. If we cannot do the later, we will never get to the former either.

I do not profess to understand myself fully, but I have learned some things over the decades. Things like how I express creativity, love my wife, hate injustice and how much I enjoy both nature and the works of man.

We are imperfect replicas of God, as in God made us in His image Genesis 1:26 . Our creativity, love and hates reflect that the nature of God, while the imperfections that keep us from being perfect reproductions of God continually allow us to be evil and hateful creatures.

Based on that, God created us for 1) to express His creativity, and 2) to express His love. You have to admit the humans are facinating and thought provocking creatures, full of many things that reflect creativity. And in order to experience love, both parties must be free to NOT love, otherwise love is not real. So God gave us the free will blessing/curse that is integral to our being able to love Him should we desire to do so. That freewill also makes us capable of being the most hateful entities on this speck of dirt orbiting a minor star in an ordinary galaxy amid billions of other galaxies in a universe that we are just now beginning to see, let alone understand.

I wish there were a few honest believers who just said "I have no friggin clue" instead of engaging in a multi millenial exercise in philosophical gymnastics designed to get inside the head of a supreme being nobody has ever seen, talked to, or received an e-mail from.

"I'm here, I don't know why, I don't think it was a twist of fate, I think there's some design to my life and therefore a designer" leave it at that. As soon as you go one step further you start going down the crazy path and end up quoting old testamant scripture to prove god does indeed put out fires if you pray hard enough.

i like you a lot slowguy, i really do. but i gotta disagree with you here. essentially, by saying god created everyhing for his own glory, it boils creation down to gods xanadu.

under what circumstances does building a palace for your own glory full of servants to do nothing but worship you display anything other than douchbaggery?

The fly in the ointment in your reply is that I DO have a clue as I have thought about this for some time.

I once was a agnostic, of the "I really don't care whether there is or is not a god" type. I hated the hypocracy of many christians, and still do, and avoided them as much as possible. That changed at some point, with a decent story that I will leave out, but leave it to say that it was a conversation with God that brought me to where I am today. You may deny that talking to God or hearing back from Him is real, possible or has ever happened, but I can attest that He does communicate with us in a direct and understandable manner WHEN that is the best way to get our attention.

I don't want to get into an argument over this, you are as entitled to your opinions and so am I, so please don't take this as an attack or anything like that. It's just that sometimes just thinking about why the heck am I here can spark the epiphany that leads to understanding the why.

"...I look at"God"as a process..." I like that quote,I think that is a very accurate statement. The question then becomes,"WHAT is the process?" Luke 16:13"you cannot serve two masters God and money". So the question is,do we make"God" our master and make money our servent OR do we money our master and make"God"our servent? Strangely enough almost EVERYONE(whether they"believe" in God or not)chooses the latter. So it is not"God"or money that is the problem it is our RELATIONSHIP to them. In other words,we should make"God"our master and money our servent, then things work exactly the way things should.
