California Continues the Long March Into Insanity

Well, when I lived there we all referred to the place as The Land of Fruits and Nuts. ;-)

The latest evidence of that incontrovertible fact is The California Clean Environment Initiative.

California green-lights initiative that is conspiracy theorist’s dream

"Activists in California can now move forward collecting signatures for an expansive ballot initiative that encompasses a world of non-evidence-based and fringe notions, according to California Secretary of State Alex Padilla.

The initiative would eliminate vaccination requirements for schools and daycares, banish genetically modified organisms, and prohibit basic water treatments with fluoride and chlorine. The initiative would ban more than 300 chemicals, including fire retardants, and it would order the removal of smart meters. These, the initiative claims, are “neither smart nor meters but intermittent samplers, not accurate, not accountable, [that] emit and receive unnecessary radiation.”

That's the CA initiative process. It has made it further than the Sodomite Suppression Act which would have made legal to kill gay people (which was followed by the Intolerant Jackass initiative). We'll see if it makes it onto the ballot like the condoms for porn actors or free range chicken initiatives.

Maybe the wall should be built up along the CA state line.

I know it is horrible of us to actually be using democracy to guide some of our laws. As silly as some of them are, it is fine as they almost always get voted down and the process works. If it is a real issue like gay marriage, or the pot thingy, you will see a long history of them on the ballot, losing pretty good at first, then over the years gaining momentum until the cross the threshold. And on these two issues and more like air quality, etc. , we have been well ahead of the curve for the nation. Its not all good here of course, but how about our 1% property taxes? I get people from all over the country that had no idea, some who pay almost 3%. Forget about all the little other taxes, that is the one big one that affects every home owner, and likely their single biggest tax. But lets keep that a secret...

The other stuff is just noise that usually gets drowned out, I'll bet if you use your search skills you could find some really good stuff from some southern states that actually gets passed...

On a serious note, what are the chances of this ballot initiative passing?

0.0 chance.. Even though the anti-vaccine group is loud here, they are no way near a majority. All the other stuff on the initative is just noise that is already being addressed. But it does make for some noise to possible confuse some people into voting for it. That is the thing with these things, how you name them, how they get described often is so confusing that people in opposition will vote thinking that they are following their own thinking.

Now some counties could possible pass anti vaccine laws, but this will be a state measure and will go down in flames, probably won't even make it to the ballot..

0.0000% chance of passing, the bigger question is whether it has any chance of qualifying. I would say that it is also very low. It's a crazy basket of nonsense, and many crazies will balk at the nutty ideas that don't align with their issue.

Our legislature has the habit of passing nutty legislation without taking it to the voters. For example, knowingly infecting someone with HIV is now reduced to a misdemeanor, sanctuary state status, charging a crime if repeatedly using the wrong gender pronoun (regardless of gender), etc, etc.

While this latest left wing nonsense may not qualify we are likely to see the legislature cherry-pick some of the nuttiness and pass legislation regardless. I think if it as the great scene from Thelma & Louise where the legislature is in the car and the cliff represents the farthest left wing craziness and they just keep driving full speed...
