Bike Rack - covered by auto insurance? Yes/No?

During a bad storm two weeks ago a tree and an electrical line fell on the VW and ripped off the new bike rack (sans bikes). Liberty Mutual will cover the damage to the car but not the bike rack. The rack was one of the new Thule ones and it retails for about $700 and I think they should cover it (obviously!). Anyone ever have this sort of issue? I'm trying to fight it out but every time I call Liberty they say they a need a few more days to have someone at a manger level examine the claim. This has been dragging on and my guess is they are hoping I'll give up. Any ideas?

Isn't this similar to someone stealing a laptop that you left in your car? They'll cover the smashed window of the car but not the laptop. I believe you can claim it on home owner's but the increased premiums might not be worth it.
Is it right? I don't believe it is.

I was rear-ended and my bike rack was totaled - 4 bikes also damaged - while on a vacation. The other driver (at fault) had the same insurance carrier I have. He called them right there on the phone - and they covered the cost of a new one and bike repair - so I could continue with the vacation. A few weeks later that same insurance company called me to make sure everything went OK.

Nope. Tree came down on the car, brought the electric line with it that snagged the bike rack and that is what actually ripped off the rack. 1st estimate to repair the car was $4k (from a VW "certified" shop); Liberty made us get an estimate from their preferred body shop and it came in at $2k.

MY insurance will not cover anything attached to MY car that wasn't put their by the manufacturer.
They will cover someone else's if I plow into them.
I'm other words, if a 699 lb. dildo fell out of the sky and sheared off my racks I'm out of luck.

What you are learning is the difference between liability insurance and property insurance. When you run into someone or they into you, the liability insurance covers the damage that was caused. It includes all property damage and bodily injury and medical expenses up to the limit of your coverage. When your property is damaged and it is not the result of someone else's negligence, then you must look to the insurance that covers your property. When you bought your insurance, you only bought coverage for the car, not its contents or external modifications. Read your policy to see what it covers.

Different coverage applies. Lorenzo your claim was a liability claim against the other driver/insurance co.
The OP has a property damage claim and it may or may not be covered by the auto insurance. Check the wording in your policy. Was it permanently attached to the vehicle? If your auto carrier isn't liable for the damage your homeowners policy should cover it, all be less your deductible.

Got rear ended by a cab that damaged my Saris Thelma. The taxi's insurance gave us $$ for the rack's retail price. I went ahead and bought a completely different rack. If you've ever seen a Thema, it's huge and bound to happen again.

Whose tree was it? Neighbors? Than their property insurance is most likely liable.....but b/c of the value most likely it will come out of their pocket b/c of deductible. Depends on what sort of friendship/relations you have with your neighbors.
Had a valet destroy bike/roof rack by pulling car with bike on top into a parking garage. Their insurance did dick. My homeowners insurance covered the bikes (retail replacement cost :-) ), but not the rack as they claimed b/c it was attached to the car, it was part of the car. I'm in small claims court in 3 weeks against them to recover the cost of the rack, and the deductible + the damage to the interior of the car (they took the broken bike & put it, gear side down, in the back seat instead of rear of the SUV). Looking at $4k give or take.

Regarding the tree, unless the neighbors were grossly negligent then it would be considered an act of god and the neighbors would NOT be liable, if they for some reason were held liable I know of NO homeowners policy that has a deductible for liability coverage.
Regarding your incident with the bikes and the valet, did you contact your auto carrier as well as your homeowners? Seems that one or both should be taking care of the damage &/or recovering the damage from the valet.

My deductible on my auto is $5k, so not worth pursuing against them. Besides, small claims against valet service is pretty much a slam dunk.
