Thanks,
Will they work as 9 speed? I'm trying to build up one of the first Cervelo tri bikes from the 90s.
Thanks for thinking of me,
Joe

From what I've read on the forums - all bar end shifts can be run friction with any speed rear derailleur.

Hi Matt,
I am mechanically challenged, so I checked on line and it's got conflicting info, so I'm going to my bike shop tomorrow and see if its possible. I'll get back to you as soon as I know.

Buying an older 9 speed and using it in friction mode is possible. My opinion is that it's not ideal though. When the spacing between cogs and the cable pull of the RD changed over time, friction shifting became a lot less ideal. There would likely be constant adjusting at the shifter. I haven't tried it though.
I Have a rear derailuer if you want it too
