SOLD Zipp 303 Firecrest Tubular Wheelset Disc Brakes
Quote | Reply
SOLD SOLD SOLD

Zipp 303 tubular wheels for disc brake bikes (road or CX). Used under 2 hours because let's just say my CX racing career didn't take off the way I thought it would. Includes EITHER the Clement MXP tubulars shown on the wheels or the LAS tubulars shown separately. Each have less than 1 hour of use. You get to keep the Avid rotors on the wheels. Hubs are SRAM Rise 60. If you are thinking about going XX1 11 speed, you can replace the hub body really cheap. Absolutely like new and because these are disc brake wheels, the rims have never known the touch of a brake pad. $1,100 or $1,000 without tubulars.

All prices are shipped in CONUS with payment by Paypal gift.

I am easy to reach - take my Slowtwitch ID and add @yahoo.com and you've got my email address. That also happens to be my PayPal email address. And my Slowtwitch ID is the same as my eBay ID. Which is the same as my Vimeo ID. I'm not very original and I do a bad job at being anonymous on the Internets. Shoot me an email - the rings are packed and ready to ship.

Not to hijack OP's thread, but if someone is interested in that QXL 52T (#1) ring and needs a matching 38T QXL ring (110 BCD), I have a brand new one still in package. Please PM if interested.

I've got a set of 303 discs and they're incredible wheels, but mine have the Zipp hub. I jus wish I had them before the night prior to the last CX race of the season so I could have actually raced them!

Will the Rise hub allow for an 11 speed road free hub conversion? That might be helpful info to add to the post just in case it can only accept an XD driver for XX1 since the XX1 10/42 cassette is a pretty wide range for CX. I can't remember whether it's the Rise or Roam hubs that can't (or couldn't) accept an XC conversion, so it could be possible that neither would have an 11 speed road hub option. It would be so nice if only some of these things would be a little more simple and standardized.

I assume the rear hub is for 135mm ? I'm actually searching for a 130mm set.

A few questions:

Are those the Avid HS1 or HSX rotors? What size are they?

Were the LASs glued and then removed or are they virgin? If they were removed, how is the base tape?

How are you handling shipping?

Thanks,
-Colin

They are HS1. 160mm front, 140mm rear.

Thanks for asking. Forgive the lengthy response, but this just allows me to indulge in a historical account of my ill-fated cyclocross racing career.

Wheels were new and virgin and needed a pair or tubulars so that I could begin my domination of the SoCal cyclocross racing circuit. Being a dorky roadie type worried about things like Crr, and being in the desert we affectionately call SoCal, I decided to go with file treads and the LAS tubulars. So I ran them one race, completely sucked, DNF'd, and blamed part of my sucky performance on the file treads.

So off came the LAS tubies after that one race and on went the MXPs. Did one race on those, DNF'd, realized that while admittedly I probably got more traction with the MXPs, my issues with cross were not the tires but instead the fact that I SUCK AT CYCLOCROSS, and that was the last ride I did on the wheels and the MXPs.

Last spring, I was prepping for the SPY Belgian Waffle Ride, and it was clear that I was going to need the cross bike for that one. (My other bike is a 2013 S5 and can only take 23mm tires - that wasn't going to cut it). So I figured "I am gonna need as much help as I can get for that ride - let me dust off those awesome Zipp 303 race wheels" and bought some 27mm Vittoria Pave tubulars to run for that race. So I took off the MXPs and was *this close* to mounting the Vittorias when I asked myself "Do I really want to run tubulars on a 140 mile road/dirt race?" So I ended up getting a pair of the Paves in clincher, used my cheap Chinese carbon clincher wheels, and so that is why the Zipp 303s do not currently have any tires mounted to them.

Here are photos of the both the rims and the LAS and MXPs, each of which were used for exactly one short DNF cross race:

I recently shipped a frame from here in CA to NM (so not far) and that cost $45 via FedEx ground. I imagine the wheels will cost about the same, probably more, particularly if the buyer is on the East Coast. But I will pay for shipping if payment is made Paypal gift.

Thanks for the good info. Do more CX, it's rad! Shipping will probably be pretty cheap from CA to me here in WA. I am interested, need to talk to the wife. One last question, were these wheels custom built? I don't think the stock set from zipp comes with the Rise hubs.

They weren't custom - at least I didn't have them custom built. I think SRAM got together with its subsidiary Zipp and had some of these wheels made with the SRAM Rise hubs in order to provide an offering for CX disc riders - which would make sense since more and more CX frames are coming out with disc brakes and Zipp does not make a disc brake hub. Aaaand I gotta say, as little as I know about going fast at CX, I would have to say that the Zipp 303s are about as perfect of cross wheels as I could imagine, given that they are SO WIDE and provide a lot of area to keep the rim and tire glued together, even at low pressure.
