I'm working on high volume base training and I'm having difficulty scheduling my week as I'm getting some hours that are very high (for me at least). I'm training for the 1/2 IM distance and expect to go between 5:15 and 5:30 this year. Next week I've got 17 hours to schedule. After scheduling my long brick, long run and 3 swims (the swim is my strong suit, 3 swim workouts of 1 hour each keeps me slowly improving) I've still got almost 8 hours to work with. Typically, I will only have 3 rides and 1 run in addition to what I listed above. This means that each of these workouts will be 2 hours, including the run?!
How do I decide between low frequency/high duration workouts and higher frequency/lower duration?
