Slowtwitch seems like it has very fast responses to me, but there must be other forums that have more people surfing on them. What are some?

USENET used to be IT when I first got online.
Like all groups/boards though, it goes through a transformation. Really smart people start off and the conversations are useful and informative. Then some newbies come in, and the signal-to-noise ratio deteriorates. Finally, the signal becomes so corrupted that only newbies, hardcores, and trolls frequent the forum. Welcome to the lavendar room.
The pyschological dynamics of internet discussion precludes any truly useful forums from persisting for any length of time. Therefor you are relegated to "surfing" the forums while their SnR ratio is good, and moving on from them once they deteriorate.
A few sites where you have to verify your identity, and pay, with a credit card have seemed to maintain good SnR ratios over time.
