Now why does politics enter in a sports article?

This is about the NBA. And no sarcasm is intended. I got to the last sentence and I don't know why it was included.

Here is the line:

Axelrod's father, David, is a prominent Democratic political consultant in Chicago who has worked with Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.

What difference does it make who this fan's father is? As I read the article the dad was not at the game or a party in the lawsuit.

I thought the same thing when I read that article earlier today, the only thing I can think of is the writer was trying to insert some more drama into the situation by implying that the guy's father is some kind of political heavy hitter.
