GEM Anscombe once told A.J. Ayer that, "If you didn't talk so quickly, people wouldn't think you were so clever."
To which he replied, "If you didn't talk so slowly, people wouldn't think you were so profound."
Myself, I talk waaaaay too fast. It never makes anyone think I'm clever, though- just unintelligible, often. You?
I once sat in a small theatre on the Fox lot in LA, watching the first 40 minutes of the rough cut of "Bulworth" (40 mins was all that had been edited together). Afterwards, Warren Beatty came out and spoke to us, as he had been editing it in a booth behind us. He spoke rather slowly and deliberately, about subjects ranging from the film business to politics. I found him interesting but not particularly profound, but the people around me were starstruck. I think they mistook his slow speech for deep thought. I tried to tell people, "listen, the guy is like 55 years old now. Of course he's developed some opinions by now, otherwise he'd be a complete moron. Just talking slowly doesn't make you a genius."
Of course, I had to hold my more mischievous tendencies at bay. At one point, nobody had a question for him, and he reached out asked anybody to ask him anything. I had to literally hold my arm down from raising it and asking, "so Warren, how many has it been? More than Wilt?" referring of course to his other reputation in Hollywood.
