We have discussed this before, but, this example really jumped out at me.
From Yahoo news, two headlines -
1) Engaged Ohio Teacher Had Sex With 13-Year-Old Student From [His/Her] School
2) Jersey City middle school teacher charged with sexually assaulting students
Now, which of these two teachers is male and which is female? How many can guess correctly from the headlines?
Time's up.
A 27 year old female teacher, who is an intervention specialist and a girls' volleyball coach had "sexual contact" with a 13 year old female student in January and February 2017. She plead guilty to "sexual battery" and will serve 3 years. Her conduct was called "had sex with" in the headlines.
A 42 year old male teacher "touched a student's private parts over his/her clothing." His conduct is called "sexually assaulting students."
You gotta be kidding me. Now, both incidents are wholly inexcusable, but this bias in reporting is ridiculous. What the female teacher did was unequivocally categorized as "sexual assault." In fact, it was rape. So, why isn't it referred to such in the headline?
NOTE: When you open the story from the main Yahoo Page, both stories appear on the same page. But, evidently, it will not let me copy it that way, so I am linking both articles.
