I don't use them all the time. Salomon RC Skins with pink skin.
I raced on them twice this year, just cuz.
A couple of people I was racing against remarked how good my glide was for skins.
A lot faster than you would think or the reviews would have you believe.

The last couple of years have seen HUGELY variable conditions.
Cold as hell, then warm and melting, then freezing rain and back to cold as hell.
Tons of snow.. then no snow for weeks on end.

I still bring both my waxed and unwaxed skis out to the trails and chose my weapons for the day.

where do you ski?

it's great to have options. that said, skins are *very* slow compared to a properly waxed ski (buddy and i did some tests and found it was a 7+ minute penalty on an hour on flat terrain), but as you point out it is not always possible to have a properly waxed ski. i'm lucky to live in a region where it is *generally* easy to wax.

sometimes that extra drag is an option.

you won't ever find someone on the world cup racing skins -- or crowns for that matter. too much of a penalty on the glide.

there are scenarios when skins won't kick (some ice, for example).

nothing is ever easy.

Race ski waxes are obsurd at $160-200 per 20-30g vs. MSW at $20 per pound

Last time I bought wax at Walmart it was $2 and change per pound.
