Disposing old tires

Been cleaning out my closet and have a big bag of shot old tires to get rid of. Is there a right way to dispose of them besides just dumping in the trash? Any usual places for recycling or re-use?

If there's a Performance Bike shop near you, they collect 'em for recycling. If not, try calling the LBS's in your area - if they don't recycle them, they might have a suggestion.

I'm not aware of anybody actually recycling or up cycling tires at this point... The problem with recycling or up cycling these items is that there has to be market demand for goods made from them.. in the case of automotive tires we can product rubber mulch and some crumb rubber products, but not much else after the steel cable is removed from the tire. I'm not sure what can be made from old bicycle tires other than the few belts I've seen people make... However, Ecologic/Green Guru of Boulder, Colorado is up-cycling inner tubes into beautiful consumer goods, they can be sent to them in Colorado, or dropped off at any REI.

We've partnered with them on a couple of products and the results are really impressive and the quality is very nice! The Borsa Americano below is made from recycled inner tubes quilted over recycled wetsuit which gives it a bit of padding.

those are nice looking bets! I wonder if you can make wallets out of used tires. by their very nature, tyres are difficult to dispose off, you cannot burn them since it emits toxic fumes.

Do you happen to know what Performance does with the tires after they receive them? That's where I've always brought mine, but if they end up just throwing them out afterwards then I might as well just do that myself.

From Performance:

We provide cyclists with an easy way to recycle by equipping each of our stores with a bin for depositing their old tires, tubes and chains. Through our partnership with Liberty Tire Recycling and rebike.com your old tires and tubes will become weightlifting plates, rubberized asphalt, athletic surfaces, rubber mulch, or tire-derived fuel. Your old chains will become functional clocks, bowls, picture frames, key chains, and bottle openers. Join us today in recycling more!
